Wayne Warrior Invitational Recap

2010 Wayne Invitational Summary

A great night for track and field was noticed by all at the 13th annual Wayne Invitational, held at Good Samaritan Athletic Fields at Heidkamp stadium.  When it was all said and done, over 87 National elite marks were set, including a new state record in the boys hammer throw, as well as a new Division 2 girls long jump record.  8 meet records were set, as well as established marks for two new events in the hammer throw and triple jump.

Demoye Bogle of Wayne, was a double winner in the 110 hurdles (13.99) and 100 dash (10.77),  and owns the fastest time in the state in the hurdles and the #10 100 meter dash time.  Bogle’s teammate, Trey Hammons-Scott, ran his career best of 14.54 to take 2nd in the 110 high hurdles.  Taylor Celestin of Mason 3rd  (14.60), Mike Melchor of Centerville 4th (14.71) and Stephen Parker of Miamisburg 5th (14.80) round out the top 5 times, which is impressive to have 5 under 15 seconds as well as one under 14.  Chase Cochran, 2nd to Bogle in the 100 (10.84), dominated the 200 dash (21.78) and anchored two winning relays (4x100 and 4x200).  Jacob Wiley of Miamisburg cruised easily in the 400 meter dash (48.7), ahead of Michael Archbold of St. Xavier (49.3) and Alex Ham of Mason (49.5).  Luke Norris of Lebanon owned the 300 hurdles, running 37.1, followed by Cory Ochs of St. Xavier (39.1) and Tim Grice of Miamisburg (39.3).

The 1600 meter run was just as dramatic.  Oakwood senior Peter Hix was victorious, by outkicking a great field.  Hix’s time of 4:19.05 edged Vandalia Butler senior Doug Norris (4:20.36).  Junior Chad Kiggins of Carroll was 3rd in 4:21.86, sophomore Jordan Redd of Fairborn was 4th (4:24.59), Tyler Feitshans of Tippecanoe was 5th (4:25.06) and Aaron Dinzeo of Sidney rounded out the top 6 (4:27.12).  A time of 4:39.99 got you 16th place.

The 3200 run saw 11 athletes under 10 minutes, led by Mason junior Zach Wills.  His time of 9:31.40 was just ahead of Norris of Butler (9:36.75).  Mason had 4 runners under 10 minutes.  Eric Gruenbacher of St.Xavier was 3rd in 9:39.68, while Matt Kahl of Mason was 4th right behind him in 9:39.94.

The fields were dominated by the presence of Eastwood’s Justin Welch, who did not disappoint.  Welch bettered his own state record in the hammer throw, tossing it 245-04 inches.  He proceeded to set a new meet record in the discus (189-10), and took home the tri-fecta by winning the shot put, with a throw of 63-4.25, where there were 6 guys over 50 feet.  In the discus, Wayne’s Jared Harrison was the closest to Welch, throwing 165-8.

Pole vault was won by sophomore Mike Shiverdecker of Wayne, clearing his season’s best of 14-7, but it took 13-0 to place in the top 8.  Middletown’s Dennis Brown was victorious in the long jump, soaring 22-1.25.  It took 20-6 to qualify for finals, and there were 15 athletes over 20 feet.

The relays were exciting, too.  Mason showed it’s depth by winning the 4x800 in 8:05.88, Lebanon was 2nd in 8:15.76, while Wayne was third in 8:16.98.

Lebanon was smooth in the 4x100, with a great anchor leg by Cochran to lean past Sidney, 42.5 to 42.6.  Northmont won a great 4x200 race (1:29.42), enroute to a new meet record.  John F. Kennedy (1:29.67), Sidney (1:29.89) and Wayne (1:29.99) rounded out the top sub 1:30 times.

Mason girls used talent, depth and relays to win over Cleveland Collinwood.  Mason’s Brittany Best won a close 100 meter race, 12.42, edging Amber Smith of Collinwood (12.43) and Xenia’s Brittany Latimer (12.55).  Smith, however, dominated the hurdles, winning the 100 hurdles (14.17 semi-final) and 300 hurdles (43.4).  Teammate Erin Busbee had a career day herself, leaping 19-11.75 feet in the long jump, enroute to a new Division 2 state record.  She also soared 39-4.25 to win the triple jump.  She capped off her evening by setting a new meet record in the 200 dash, running 24.61, beating Xenia’s Lattimer by over a second (25.72) and Betts of Mason (25.99).

Oakwood’s Kelsey McDonald beat an impressive 400 field, running 57.7, just shy of the meet record (57.1).  The top 6 were all under 60 seconds –Haley Walters (Kings 58.4), Janae Wilson (Northmont 58.7), Jade Kinney (Lebanon 58.8), Elaina Cromer (Miami Valley School 59.6) and Ashley Rodgers (Alter 59.9).

The 1600 meter run pitted Carly Hamilton of Springboro and Julie Accurso of Miami East.  Hamilton captivated the field, crushing the old meet record of 5:04.30 by Mason’s Angela Bizzarri, running the 4 lap race in 4:58.88.  Accurso was not far behind, also running under 5:00 by going 4:59.19.  Megan Wright of Miamisburg was third in 5:09.53, while freshman Sydney Leiher of Beavercreek was 4th in 5:12.23.  Katie Landwehr of Tippecanoe was 5th in 5:19.60; rounding out the athletes under 5:20.

The 800 meter run was just as exciting, as Megan Wright of Miamisburg was victorious in 2:17.31, Accurso was 2nd in 2:18.72, Katie Kesseler of Springboro was 3rd in 2:19.58, Kaitlyn Good of Vandalia-Butler was 4th 2:19.72, and Maria Meredith of Fairmont 2:19.98 was 5th.  5 runners under 2:20, while 2:29.89 was 15th

Finally, the 3200 did not disappoint, either.  Freshman Rachel Mahle of Springboro went 11:21.98.  Jessica Harrison of Mason was 2nd in 11:28.58, Leiher of Beavercreek was 3rd in 11:29.23, Paige Miller of Kings was 4th in 11:29.58, Devin Flood of Centerville was 5th in 11:31.30, and Tori Martin was 6th in 11:36.99.  Like the other distance races, incredible to have 7 runners under 12 minutes.

Michigan’s Saline High School Brooke Pleger made her visit to Huber Heights a good one, unleashing her hammer throw 145-5.

Mason dominated the 4x100 and 4x200 relays (48.91 and 1:43.93, respectively), while Wayne was right behind them (49.99 and 1:45.77).  Collinwood bested the field in the 4x400 (3:59.40) while Springboro won the 4x800 (9:37.84).

After a long night of competition, when all was said and done, Wayne Boys and Mason Girls were crowned team champions.  Lebanon boys and Collinwood girls took runner-up, while Centerville Boys and Lebanon girls were 3rd.
