The first day of action at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded late this afternoon, and Bowling Green State University's track and field squad stands in a four-way tie for ninth place after the day's events.

In all, three out of the 21 total competitions were completed during Thursday's action.  A fourth got underway and will be completed on Friday, as athletes competed in four of the heptathlon's seven events.

BGSU's top finish of the day came in the hammer throw event.  Freshman Kristin Boettcher came within three feet of her season-best performance and placed just outside of points range, as she took ninth with a mark of 167-07 (51.07m).  Boettcher was four feet shy of the eighth-place competitor, a spot that would have netted the Falcons a point in the team standings.

Sophomore Ashley Harris and freshman Brooke McCombs also competed in the hammer throw.  Harris placed 18th with a toss of 136-10 (41.72m), while McCombs finished just behind Harris in 19th place.  McCombs' netted a throw of 131-09 (40.15m).

In the javelin throw, junior Paige Lane completed a toss of 111-09 (34.07m) to earn 11th place.

The 10,000-meter run rounded out the day's action for the Falcons.  Megan Kelsey, a junior, set a career-best mark in the race as she ran the 10K in 39:54.56.  The time placed Kelsey 24th in the field.  Senior Andrea Pereira de Almeida finished 20th with a time of 39:16.02, while junior Sally Kandie placed 22nd after completing the race in 39:30.33.

After the first day, the Orange and Brown are tied with Eastern Michigan, Miami and Northern Illinois with zero points.  Kent State and Akron lead the field with 25 and 24 points, respectively.  Buffalo and Ohio are tied for third with 18 points, while Central Michigan follows closely at 16 points.

Western Michigan has 11 points for sixth place.  Ball State (four points) and Toledo (one point) reside in seventh and eighth place.

Action at the 2010 MAC Championships will continue on Friday and Saturday.  Live results can be found at the official MAC Championships website, linked at the top of the page.  The University of Buffalo, hosts of the Championships, will provide live streaming of Saturday's action.
