Powers Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team Honors

Thu, Jun, 03 | Women's Cross Country, Women's Track and Field

Barbara Powers, a junior on the Bowling Green State University track and field and cross country teams, has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District (District IV) Second Team.  The honor was announced today (Thursday, June 3) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A stalwart distance runner for the Falcons, Powers saved one of her best performances of the 2010 track and field season for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships in May.  At the championship meet, Powers placed sixth in the 3000m steeplechase by running the course in 11:02.30.  The time was fifth-best in BGSU history.  She also had a top-ten steeplechase finish at the All-Ohio Championships, placing seventh after a run of 11:09.65.

Powers had a personal victory and took part in a relay team win during the outdoor season.  At the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, she won the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 7:14.62.  Then, at the Hillsdale Relays, she helped the 4x800m relay team secure its best time of the season, 9:12.61, on its way to a victory.

Powers, a native of Bowling Green, also participated in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m at times during the outdoor campaign.  At the Jack Shaw Invitational, she ran both the 800m and 1500m, finishing fifth in the 1500m race after a time of 5:00.90.  In the 5000m, she earned a third place finish with a time of 18:22.74 at the Ohio Team Challenge.

During the indoor track season, Powers had multiple top-three finishes.  She registered a personal-best time of 5:08.30 in the mile run at the Jane Herrmann Invitational, placing second.  She also placed second at the Tom Wright Classic, running the 3000m in a season-best time of 10:30.01.  Along with the mile run at the Jane Herrmann Invite, Powers ran the 3000m, placing third in 10:37.51.

Powers notched a fifth-place finish in the 3000m at the All-Ohio Championships, almost besting her Tom Wright Classic time as she posted a mark of 10:31.64.

In the classroom, Powers has a 4.00 grade point average as an exercise science major.  She is one of only five honorees with a 4.00 GPA out of the 20 members of the All-District First and Second Teams.

This is the second consecutive year (and fourth time in five years) that a BGSU student has been named Academic All-District.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team is the result of voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members within District IV. The district consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
