Late-Season Breakthroughs From Four Ohio Underclassmen
Campbell, Craig, Bailey, and Jones are ending the season with top marks
The indoor season is wrapping up in Ohio, and four freshmen are leaving their names top of their class leaderboards. Vincent Campbell, Colt Craig, Lyla Bailey, and Madison Jones are all Class of 2029 athletes producing marks that are hard to ignore.
BOYS
Campbell ran 4:31.61 in the 1600m finals at the OATCCC D3 Indoor State Meet, topping the Ohio freshman leaderboard by over a second. He opened his indoor season in December with a 4:39.65, so the progression has been steady all winter. He also ran 2:09.56 in the 800m this indoor season.
Craig opened his indoor season on Dec. 6 at 13-0 and just cleared 14-4 at the OATCCC D3 Indoor State Meet on Mar. 7. The 14-4 leads all Ohio freshmen in the pole vault by a significant margin, with the next athlete on the leaderboard at 12-9. He also sits tied for 26th in the state overall regardless of grade.
GIRLS
Bailey opened her season at 29-9.75 in the shot put and threw 36-5 at the OATCCC D3 Indoor State Meet on Mar. 7, a PR that ranks her first among Ohio freshmen in the event. The next freshman on the leaderboard is Ashlyn McKinney at 35-2.5. Bailey is 41st in the state overall across all grades.
Jones leads all Ohio freshmen in both the 200m and the 60m hurdles. Her 25.81 in the 200m makes her one of only three freshmen under 26 seconds in the state this indoor season. Her 8.72 in the 60m hurdles makes her the only freshman under 9 seconds in the event. Both marks came at the OATCCC D3 Indoor State Meet on Mar. 7.
