Sztykiel and Sutherland Named to Academic All-MAC Squad

TOLEDO, OH - Seniors Dagna Sztykiel and Michelle Sutherland have earned spots on the 2009-10 Academic All-MAC Team, the league office has announced last week.  A total of 27 student-athletes were named to the squad that was voted on by faculty athletic representatives at Mid-American Conference institutions. 

A native of Bytom, Poland, Sztykiel earned a 3.79 grade-point average in business. She made second-team All-MAC honors after finishing second in the steeplechase and seventh in the 5000 meter run at the MAC Championships. Sztykiel won the steeplechase at the Ohio Team Challenge, placed 11th at the prestigious Penn Relays and came away with a victory at  the Toledo Tune-Up in the 1500 meter-run.  

Sutherland (Maumee, OH) earned a 3.25 grade-point average in athletic training. She also earned second-team All-MAC accolades. She was a 2010 Academic All-MAC Indoor Track selection, finished second in the high jump at the MAC Championships and winning the high jump at the Toledo Invitational and Toledo Tune-Up. Sutherland also recorded runner-up finishes in the high jump at Coastal Carolina and the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, and finished fifth at the prestigious Penn Relays in the high jump.

Joining Sztykeil and Sutherland on the sqaud were Akron's Larisa Arcip, Alina Bocicor, Carrie Kayes, Allison Lawyer, Valerie Wert and Lauren Whitehill, Ball State's Thekla Lorenz and Sarah Kehe, Bowling Green's Paige Lane and Barbara Powers, Buffalo's Tiffany Maskulinski and Jackie Burns; Central Michigan's Raeanne Lohner and Erika Schroll; Eastern Michigan's Lauren Quaintance; Kent State's Jessica Lhotsky and Diana Dumitrescu; Miami's Kelsey McHugh, Kelley Miller, Amanda Mirochna, Nicki Mitchell and Rachel Patterson; Northern Illinois's Cora Caulfield; and Western Michigan's Ashley Hunault and Irene Cooper.    

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award
