ZANG BREAKS CAIN'S RECORD, HEADLINING STELLAR CONCLUSION TO OHIO INDOOR SEASON
The Teays Valley senior ran 9:37.15 at New Balance Nationals, breaking a 13-year-old national record.
Ohio athletes headed to Boston and New York City this past weekend to compete at New Balance Nationals and Nike Indoor Nationals, respectively, and left their marks on both meets.
Katy Zang Runs 9:37.15, Breaks Mary Cain's 13-Year-Old National Record
The top Ohio performance of the weekend undoubtedly belongs to Teays Valley senior Katy Zang, who won the girls 2-mile championship at New Balance Nationals on Saturday in 9:37.15. Her mark bettered Mary Cain's national high school record of 9:38.68--which Cain ran at this same meet in February 2013--and ensured she finished a full 15 second ahead of second place, which went to Abigail Hennessy of Westford, MA, in 9:52.55.
Zang, a University of Indiana commit, came into the weekend having already run 9:42.84 to win the OATCCC D1 Indoor State 3200m title the week before. And for good measure, she also won the girls mile at NBN, going 4:35.02, good for the fastest time in the state this indoor season.
Distance: Fuller, Ellis, Gray, Kaulen, Aldrink, Szolosi, and Hearn All Place Nationally
Fairless sophomore Brice Fuller ran 8:26.83 in the boys 3000m championship at Nike Indoor Nationals, finishing 18th in the national field. University of Indiana-bound St. Xavier senior Dom Ellis ran 8:57.55 in the boys 2-mile championship at New Balance, finishing 13th.
Portsmouth senior Sean Gray--a University of Virginia commit--ran 14:27.60 in the boys 5000m championship at New Balance, finishing fourth. And fairless senior Andrew Hearn ran 3:58.71 in the boys 1500m at Nike Indoor Nationals, finishing 29th.
Fuller, Ellis, Gray, and Hearn close out the indoor campaign with the top spots on the Ohio indoor leaderboard in these events.
On the girls side, Hilliard Davidson senior Erica Kaulen won the girls 2-mile emerging elite at Nike in 10:34.81, passing through 3000m in 9:55.01 en route. Both marks place her at the top of the Ohio indoor girls leaderboard at their respective distances. Olentangy Liberty senior Elena Aldrink ran 16:13.63 in the girls 5000m championship at New Balance, finishing 4th nationally and leading the Ohio indoor girls 5000m list.

Sprints: Brazzell, Kerr, and Rock Own the State Lists
Pickerington Central senior Lorenzo Brazzell won the boys 200m at the OATCCC D1 Indoor State Meet in 21.37, and is now the Ohio indoor boys leader in the event. Meanwhile, Glenville senior Jay'Vier Kerr leads a whopping three Ohio indoor lists heading into outdoor season: the 400m at 47.69 (from the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase), the 300m at 34.21 (from the SPIRE HS Holiday Classic), and the 500m at 1:05.68 (from the VA Showcase). Glenville also owns the state's top boys 4x400 at 3:15.51 and 4x200 at 1:27.35, both from the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase.
On the girls side, SPIRE Academy senior Kadia Rock also leads three Ohio indoor lists: the 200m at 23.68 (from the SPIRE National Last Chance Meet), the 400m at 53.51 (from the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase), and the 300m at 38.45 (from the SPIRE HS Invitational). Mason senior Azarae Hawkins, who won the girls 60m at the OATCCC D1 Indoor State in a state-leading 7.42, now also leads the 55m at 7.05 after Nike Indoor Nationals where she finished 19th overall.
Field: Elijah Harris Wins Triple Jump National Title at New Balance
Western Central senior Elijah Harris won the boys triple jump championship at New Balance Nationals in Boston with a mark of 51-4, and is now the Ohio indoor state leader in the event. The ever versatile Harris also heads the Ohio indoor boys high jump list at 7-1, from the Ohio State High School Qualifier in February.
Cooper Ailes won the freshman boys 55m at Nike Indoor Nationals in 6.40, and the youngster is now the Ohio indoor boys 55m leader. Braylon Keyes, ran 7.46 in the boys 55mH at Nike, finishing 12th in the national field. He leads the Ohio indoor boys 55mH list.
On the girls side, TruSpeed Elite junior Claire Downer scored 3530 points in the girls pentathlon championship at Nike Indoor Nationals, finishing fifth nationally. She's slotted at the top of the Ohio indoor girls pentathlon list. Shelby senior Madison Henkel jumped 19-2.25 in the girls long jump championship at Nike, finishing ninth nationally and securing top placement on the Ohio indoor girls long jump leaderboard.
