NCAA Releases Head Coaches’ APR Portfolio

Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA today released Academic Progress Rate portfolios for all NCAA Division I head coaches in the sports of football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and women's track and field. Head coaches for all other sports will be added following the 2010-11 academic year, but the NCAA has selected these five sports as the highest priority for APR improvement.

“Overall, the coaches' APR scores reaffirm what our academic data showed in June,” Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “Our student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as in competition.”

All APR reports are single-year scores and are reported back to the 2003-04 season. Among Bowling Green's scores for the most recent report (2008-09), baseball coach Danny Schmitz had a 981, football coach Dave Clawson had a 960, women's basketball coach Curt Miller recorded a 953, track and field coach Cami Wells had a 952 for both indoor and outdoor seasons, and men's basketball coach Louis Orr had an 891.

In particular, football has shown remarkable improvement in just one year under Clawson, including having five players named Academic All-MAC in 2010.

“Dave Clawson and his staff have done a terrific job setting a strong foundation both academically and competitively,” Christopher said. “The academic plan set in place when Dave was hired has been followed to the letter and our APR jump this year was among the highest in all of NCAA Division I.”

Along with football, BGSU's track and field, women's basketball and baseball programs have been models of academic success.

The track and field team has been named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for three consecutive years and the Falcons had a 3.36 GPA in 2009-10. The women's basketball team has won six consecutive MAC Championships and was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, ranking sixth in the country with a 3.50 GPA. The baseball team has won three straight MAC East Division Championships and posted a 2.94 cumulative GPA in 2009-10 as two players were named to the Academic All-MAC Team.

“Cami, Curt and Danny do a great job with their programs,” Christopher said. “Like all of our coaches, they recruit quality student-athletes in every respect. They compete for championships, represent the University in a first-class manner and their student-athletes work hard in the classroom.”

Similar to football, an academic plan has been put in place for the men's basketball program moving forward. A graduate assistant has been hired in the student-athlete services department to provide extra help, academic screening tools have been introduced, and staff members travel on road trips to conduct study sessions for student-athletes who miss class.

“Our men's basketball APR score is not where it needs to be,” Christopher said. “Attrition from the program transition has left BGSU below the 925 NCAA base line. However, six of our seven seniors over the last two years have graduated with the remaining senior playing professionally overseas. And our men's basketball team had the most improved GPA of any of our 18 sports last year.”

In fact, Orr has only lost one of his scholarship recruits in three years at Bowling Green, while the team had two of the Mid-American Conference's five Academic All-MAC players last year. Marc Larson was also named ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American.

“Everyone associated with our men's basketball program – the student-athletes, coaches and staff – is pulling in the right direction to improve our APR score and overall academic performance,” Christopher said.
