The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team took two of the top seven individual spots and had three others in the top 36 of a field of over 100 runners as the Falcons placed third at today's 24th annual Mel Brodt Invitational.

The third-place team finish is Bowling Green's best in a multiple-team meet going back at least three seasons.  Last year, the Falcons' top finish was eighth at the Mel Brodt.

This year's squad appears young, hungry and aggressive, and they shook off last week's disappointing results against Toledo to fare strongly in today's meet.  The Falcons faced a strong lineup, which was headlined by Dayton.  The Flyers are ranked 11th in the Great Lakes Region in the preseason coaches' poll taken by the USTFCCCA.

BGSU's total score today was 109, trailing Dayton's 23 and Siena Heights' 93.  The Falcons finished well ahead of fourth place Findlay (123) and fifth place Ohio Northern (130).

Individually, senior Chris Moody led the Orange and Brown by running the 8K in 0:25:21.3.  Moody placed third overall behind Chris and Matt Lemon of Dayton.  Moody has eclipsed this time in an 8K race only once over the previous two seasons, finishing last year's Mel Brodt in 0:25:11.  Moody also continues his streak of being BGSU's top runner, which is now in its third season.

Joining Moody in the top five was sophomore Jason Salyer, who placed seventh.  Salyer, who tied Moody at last week's Toledo Dual, finished only seven seconds behind Moody today.  His mark of 0:25:28.1 sets a new personal record.

Rob Kelvey's time of 26:33.5 was good for 29th place, while senior Jesse Smuda came very close to setting a personal 8K record of his own.  Smuda finished in 26:45.4 today, only five seconds behind the time he registered last year at the Falcon Invitational.

Falcon newcomers Greg Black (26:47.1) and Josh Franek (27:20.1) also finished in the top 50 for BGSU.

Complete results can be found at the top of this release.  A photo gallery will be posted soon, as well.

Now, let's enjoy some post-meet comments from three of today's top Falcon finishers:
