Alderson-Broaddus swept the competition after edging out Marietta's men 33 to 35 and the Pioneer women 31 to 35. Fairmont State's men took third with 95 points, while Charleston's women placed third with 59 points.
"The course was dry and in good condition and the weather cooperated perfectly," Head Coach Derek Stanley said. "This is a challenging course with moderate hills so times are going reflect these attributes."
Sophomore
Caleb Muller (Columbus/Bexley) captured the men's individual title after crossing the line in 26:58.06. Classmate
Caleb Ellis (St. Albans, W.Va./St. Albans) followed in second by posting a time of 27:13.84. Junior
Terrance Wallace (Westerville/Westerville Central) came in third after covering the 8K course in 27:46.14.
Junior
Andy Guimond (Marietta/Marietta) was the fourth Pioneer to cross the finish line. He took 14th with a time of 29:37.29. Sophomore
Sean Hoover (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) rounded out Marietta's top five with a 17th place finish after running a time of 30:21.44.
"The men ran the race I wanted them to," Stanley said. "Finishing 1-2-3 was a goal of ours and the guys achieved it. We have to work on getting our 4-5 closer to the front, but I am confident two of the guys in the pack will emerge and move us up."
Junior
Reba Leonard (Brookville/Brookville) led Marietta's women for a second straight week after finishing third on Saturday. Leonard crossed the line in 20:28.79. Senior
Stephanie Williams (Vincent/Warren Local) followed closely behind and took fifth with a time of 21:00.50. Freshman
Amy Kauffman (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) added a third top 10 finish by placing eighth with a time of 21:41.60.
Sophomore
Lydia Tillmaand (Xenia/Xenia) and freshman
Emily Lorek (Troy/Troy) rounded out the Pioneer pack with 11th and 13th place finishes, respectively. Tillmaand crossed the line in 22:00.70, while Lorek finished the 6K course in 22:13.62.
"The women also had a good effort today," Stanley said. "We might have gone out a bit aggressive, but they wanted to win and they ran like it, so I can't fault them for that. Our focus will remain on pack running although we improved this week."
Marietta will take a week off before returning to action Saturday (Sept. 25) morning when the Pioneers compete at the Otterbein Invitational.
