Women's Cross Country Moves up in Region Rankings

9/14/2010 12:47:00 PM

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's cross country team has moved into the No. 5 spot in the NCAA Great Lakes Region Rankings as released Monday by the USTFCCCA. Coming off their strong showing against the Bowling Green squad, the Rockets moved-up one spot, from sixth, to pass Big 10 member, Indiana.

Against Bowling Green, the Rockets sat out their top five runners and only ran a team of freshmen and sophomores versus the Falcon varsity squad. The young squad didn't disappoint as they swept the first five places to register a perfect score, downing BG 15-46.

Leading the way for the Rockets was sophomore, Kristal Studer. Studer's winning time of 18:15 was a new Toledo record on that course. The previous-best performance for a Rocket on that course was Dagmara Handzlik's time of 18:23 in 2005, the year she was MAC Runner-up and an NCAA qualifier in cross country. Freshman Megan Vogelsong matched the previous record, finishing second at Bowling Green in 18:23.

The Rockets will be off until the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 25.
