Cross Country Teams Compete at MAC Championships on Saturday

Squads Aim to Improve Upon Results from 2009 Championship Meet

The 2010 season nears its completion for the Bowling Green State University cross country teams as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. on Saturday (Oct. 30) for the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships.

Western Michigan University hosts the event, which takes place at the Pine View Golf Club.  The women's race will be 6,000 meters (6K) and begins at 11:00 a.m., while the men compete in an 8,000-meter race that begins at noon.

The winning teams and individuals are crowed MAC champions, while the top 15 individuals earn all-conference honors.  Bowling Green searches for its first All-MAC selections since Eddie Kipchoge and Kara Butler in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

In the 2009 meet, the men's team finished ninth.  An eclectic mix of experience and youth will attempt to push the Falcons up the standings.

Jeff Ehler, Chris Moody and Jesse Smuda each return for their final MAC championship meet.  Last year, Moody led the Falcons with a time of 27:53.5 after also leading the team in his sophomore run (26:34).  The only other runner with MAC meet experience is sophomore Jason Salyer, who finished second for Bowling Green at the 2009 event.

Joining these four will be Greg Black, Brian Ferber, Josh Franek, Perry Fraylick, Rob Kelvey and Luke Zerkle, each of whom will be running in their first MAC championship race.

The women's team completed the 2009 Championships in the middle of the pack, placing seventh out of 12 teams.  Abby Koch returns for her second opportunity after placing first among all Falcons in 2009.  Her time of 23:40.5 earned 26th place overall.

Bowling Green's women's team has a winning tradition at the MAC championship event.  Only one school has more team championships than the Falcons' seven, and the Falcons have more individual championships than any other school.  The team has finished as high as second (2006) and fifth (2008) recently and had an individual finish seventh in 2008.

Koch stands as one of just two of the Falcons' nine runners that will not be running in their final MAC title race.  Koch and freshman Katie Borgelt will join seven seniors in an attempt to improve on last year's finish.

Running in their final MAC Championships are Heather Conger, Autumn Dettmann, Sally Kandie, Megan Kelsey, Courtney Krummert, Barbara Powers, and Tara Weiss.

Head Coach Cami Paulson said, "Things have gone well with training and preparation for the MAC meet this weekend.  We are healthy and ready to go this Saturday.  We want to stay focused but relaxed heading into the meet and have our best effort as a team on meet day.  We know that the competition level will be high, and we are excited for the challenge."

Complete results will be available on Saturday afternoon after the conclusion of the meet.
