Four Athletes at the Top of Ohio and a Roster That Goes Deeper Than That
Martin won indoor state in the hurdles and went to nationals. Garrett took the long jump title and finished 2nd in the 200m. Penrod is a sophomore leading Ohio in the 400m hurdles. Seneen leads the women's side.
There is a version of this story where you start with Keng Martin winning the indoor state title and work forward. There is another where you start with Ryder Penrod - a sophomore - leading Ohio in the 400m hurdles and work backward. Either way you arrive at the same place: Wayne has four athletes sitting at the top of their events in the state right now, in early April, with the postseason still looming in the distance.
Martin won the 60m hurdles at the OATCCC Division 1 indoor state meet in March at 7.94, then lined up at New Balance Nationals Indoor two weeks later, running 8.10 in prelims. Last spring he ran 13.80 at regionals and finished third at the OHSAA Division 1 outdoor state meet in the 110m hurdles at 14.05. He's already gone 14.01 outdoors this spring, which leads Ohio. His PR is from last May and he is still a junior.
Key'Shawn Garrett was at that same indoor state meet, on the same day, collecting two titles of his own. He won the long jump at 22-11 and finished second in the 200m at 21.58. The senior carried his form into the outdoor season . He went 10.97 to win the 100m at the Wayne Quint on Mar 27, ran 21.13w to win the 200m at the Beach Run Invitational on Apr 2-4, and bounded a 47-9 PR in the triple jump at that same meet, which ranks first in Ohio and 62nd nationally.
Abeer Seneen leads Ohio in the women's 400m hurdles at 1:12.38, a PR from the Beach Run Invitational on Apr 2-4. The senior tends to leave her best performances for when they matter most. Last spring she ran 46.97 in the 300m hurdles at districts, 47.58 at the conference championship, and reached regionals. Her current 300m hurdles mark of 49.56 from the Wayne Quint is a March time.
Then there is Penrod. Ryder Penrod ran 1:00.82 in the 400m hurdles at the Beach Run Invitational - in 11th place, in a deep field - and leads Ohio as a sophomore. He ran 42.09 in the 300m hurdles at the Wayne Quint on Mar 27, has gone 15.05 in the 110m hurdles this spring, and competed at the OATCCC D1 Indoor State Meet in January, running 8.40 in the 60m hurdles prelims.
The jumps group runs deep behind all four of them. SaMya Wilder (2027) sits second in Ohio among girls in the triple jump at 34-8.50. Michael Fleetwood (2028) has gone 40-9.75 in the same event, Nehemiah Smith (2028) has jumped 40-7.75 and cleared 6-4 in the high jump, and Julian James-Manley (2026) has gone 35-7.50. Trinity Perkins (2028) competes in the triple jump, having gone 33-5.50 so far this season and has run the 100m hurdles in 15.52.
In the sprints and hurdles, Rodney Brown (2028) has run 1:02.61 in the 400m hurdles - second in Ohio - and Sean Heisle (2026) has gone 41.85 in the 300m hurdles. Semarion Sroufe (2026) has jumped 21-3.50 in the long jump and run 22.78 in the 200m. Ma'khayla Bass (2028) has run 57.66 in the 400m dash, sixth in the state. Gabe Potts (2027) has run 2:02.72 in the 800m and Grayson Morris (2028) has vaulted 12-11.50.
Martin and Garrett have been to state and know how June feels. Most of the athletes listed behind them have not. That is the part of this story that hasn't been written yet.
