The Bowling Green State University track and field team began the 2011 season in strong fashion on Saturday (Jan. 15) with a third place finish in the annual BGSU Challenge.

The Falcons scored 118 points in the meet, held at Perry Field House.  Their total surpassed that of two of the three Mid-American Conference schools at the meet -- Miami and Ball State.  Western Michigan won the meet with 168 points.

Anchoring the Orange and Brown effort was sophomore Jeanette Pettigrew.  Pettigrew set the pace in the preliminary run, finishing in 7.64 seconds.  In the final, she didn't look back as she won with a time of 7.55 seconds.  The time falls short of the BGSU record in thevevent by just two one-hundredths of a second (7.53). 

Pettigrew scored 15 points overall as an individual, as she also placed foruth in the 200 meter dash.

Thje Falcons' best performance in the field events came in the long jump.  BGSU took home 18 points in that event by securing second, third and fifth place.  Senior Brittani McNeal (18-05.75) led the way for the Falcons.

Tatijana Jacobson also earned a second place finish, this time in the high jump.  Her leap of 5-03 was just two inches she of the winner.

Bowling Green earned third place in six other events.  Among those to secure the feat were Abby Koch (5000m), Brittani McNeal (400m), Heather Conger (800m), the "A" 4x400m relay team, Ashley Harris (weight throw and shot put).

The Falcons will next take to the track on Friday (Jan. 21) when they travel to Kent, Ohio for the All-Ohio Championships.  Following that, Bowling Green hosts the Tom Wright Classic on Saturday, Jan. 29.
