ST.XAVIER'S DISTANCE PROGRAM IS WORTH NOTING
Ellis and Three Juniors Stack the Ohio Mile Rankings
On Apr 23, Dom Ellis ran the 3000 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and finished third in 8:22.58. It was fourth-fastest time in the country and the fastest by an Ohio athlete.
That result slots into a season that has him also currently ranked first in Ohio in the mile (4:10.09) and the 3200 (8:54.94). The indoor season saw him win the OATCCC D1 Indoor State 3200 in 9:13.04 and finish 13th at New Balance Nationals Indoor in the 2 mile (8:57.55). Last fall he won the OHSAA Division 1 cross country state championship in 15:07.92. As recently as 2023, he was running 5:00 for 1600s at a JV meet - he's been on a steady climb ever since, and will run for the University of Indiana next year.
The Eastern Relays mile on Apr 17 is worth a second look. Ellis ran 4:10.09, but behind him in the same race, were his St. Xavier teammates Aidan Dehring at 4:26.96 (11th in Ohio) and William Louis at 4:30.97 (12th in Ohio). Three runners from the same program, holding three of Ohio's top 12 spots.
Another St. Xavier athlete, Liam Holman, didn't run the mile at Eastern Relays - he instead ran the 800, finishing in 1:58.83, ranked 58th in Ohio. However, six days earlier he ran 4:23.86 in the 1600 at the Princeton Spurlock Classic, which ranks 27th in the state.
The distance group is the program's sharpest edge, but St. Xavier fields athletes well beyond it. James Theobald is 44th in Ohio in the high jump at 6-4. Rylan Puryear is 96th in the 300 hurdles at 41.06. Beckett Stimson is 126th in the pole vault at 12-6. Colin Albers is 142nd in the 3200 at 9:54.33. James Tebbe and Randall Ifeakanwa are 159th and 193rd in the 100 at 11.11 and 11.15. Jack Gunn has run 22.81 in the 200 and 51.81 in the 400.
When Ellis leaves, Dehring, Louis, and Holman will be seniors. All three ran at OHSAA D1 State in cross country last fall and all three have dropped significant time in the past twelve months. Stay tuned.
