Preston, Rowland Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week

Mon, Feb, 28 | General, Men's Golf, Women's Track and Field

Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's golfer Drew Preston and track and field athlete Jesse Rowland.

Male Athlete of the Week
Drew Preston, a junior from Ada, Mich., finished in a second-place tie at the 2011 Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas last Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 21-22). Preston's total score of 210 (72-67-71) is the second-best 54-hole total of his career. This is the third time in Preston's career that he has finished either first or second in a tournament. He currently leads the team with a 72.55 per-round scoring average, a mark that threatens the record of current head coach Garry Winger (72.4).

Female Athlete of the Week
Jessie Rowland, a sophomore from Germantown, Ohio, captured the Mid-American Conference championship in the weight throw event at the 2011 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, held on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) on the BGSU campus.  Rowland's winning toss of 63 feet and 9.75 inches (19.45 meters) set a new BGSU record, eclipsing the mark set by Lauren Bryant in 2008.  Rowland's new record is nearly a foot longer, and she out-threw her previous personal best by over six feet. Rowland is the first individual MAC indoor champion for BGSU since 2007, and her performance helped the team tie for its most points in any MAC indoor championship since 1999.
