COLUMBUS DIOCESE HAMMER THROWERS DEBUTED IN THE JAVELIN

The Ohio middle school girls javelin leaderboard looked quiet, then the Diocese of Columbus Track & Field Championships happened on May 2.

Lillian Latoche (Immaculate Conception MS, 2033) leads Ohio at 90-3 after the Diocese championships - her first recorded javelin throw. Latoche is primarily a hammer thrower, entering the meet as the state leader in that event at 88-7.5 from the Buckerfield Relay Invitational on Apr 25. (The javelin was new, the concept of heaving an implement a long distance was not!) Scarlett Sabo, Latoche's Immaculate Conception teammate, threw 71-6 at the same meet for sixth on the state board - also a first-ever javelin performance. Sabo entered the meet with a hammer mark of 69-9.75.

St. Paul MS contributed three of the top four marks on the board. Claire Diehl (2034) sits second at 83-2.25, Margaret (Mazie) Dzikowski (2033) is third at 82-3.5, and Via Durban (2034) is fourth at 76-8.5 - all from the Diocese meet, all first-ever javelin performances as well. Diehl had thrown the hammer 81-3, Dzikowski 77-10, and Durban 80-0 in the CYO qualifier series leading up to the championship and the transition in throws appears to have come naturally. Sophia Mendoza (St. James the Less, 2033) rounds out the top five at 73-2, also from the Diocese meet. Elisabeth Oberhammer (St. Brigid of Kildare, 2034) threw 69-3 for seventh, and Victoria Silva (Immaculate Conception MS, 2033) added 65-9.75 for eighth in the same competition.
