The Bowling Green State University track and field team concluded their 2011 season with several outstanding performances and earned medals in three events as they finished 11th at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Due to severe weather in DeKalb, Ill. on Friday, the meet schedule was re-arranged, and 16 championship events took place on Saturday (May 14), the final of the meet's three days. All three of the Falcons' medals were won on the last day of competition.

Sophomore standout Jeanette Pettigrew accounted for two of those medals. She placed third in both the 100- and 200-meter dash, and she recorded BGSU's second-best all-time marks in each event.

In the 200 meters, Pettigrew crossed the finish line in 23.78 seconds, falling just four one-hundredths of a second short of the BGSU record (23.74). She finished at a near-identical time to the silver medalist, Northern Illinois' Rasheta Butler, and was just two-tenths of a second behind the winner.

Meanwhile, Pettigrew came even closer to winning the 100 meter dash. Her final time, 11.49 seconds, was just one-tenth of a second behind the winner (11.39). However, because Pettigrew's time was wind-aided, it will not be used for qualifying for the NCAA Divisioin I East Regional meet.

The Falcons' other medal belongs to Tatijana Jacobson, who won the silver medal in the high jump. Jacobson equaled her season (and career) best mark with a 1.70 meter (5-7.00) leap. Her eight points were second only to Pettigrew's 12 for BGSU at the 2011 championship.

Seven other BGSU athletes scored points during Saturday's action and provided the team's ultimate total of 36.

After scoring six points on Thursday with sixth-place finishes in the hammer and javelin competitions, Jessie Rowland finished the meet with a seventh point on Saturday. She took eighth place in the shot put, with a 13.64-meter throw (44-9.00).

Rowland was also BGSU's best in the discus throw, as she placed 18th after a toss that traveled 41.37 meters.

In total, Bowling Green's throwing team accounted for 12 of the overall total of 36 points. Brooke Pleger scored two with a seventh-place finish in Thursday's hammer throw, while Ashley Harris finished sixth in Saturday's shot put. Harris' throw of 13.99 meters (45-10.75) earned three points.

On the track side of the meet, Heather Conger ended her Falcon career on a high note when she placed sixth in the 800 meter run. She secured three points for BGSU when she completed the run in 2:14.57.

Bowling Green's final point was scored in the 4x100 meter relay. The relay team, consisting of Felicia Jefferson, Jeanette Pettigrew, Allorian Horne and Erika Schmidt, placed eighth with a season-best time of 46.94 seconds.

Despite finishing tenth, the Falcons' 4x400 meter relay team also posted a season-best time (3:54.32).

Individually, fourteen BGSU athletes set 17 different personal records this weekend. This list includes Erika Schmidt (100m, 200m), Rachael Doughty (100H, long jump), Alicia Jefferson (100m), Allorian Horne (200m), Felicia Jefferson (400m) and Darlene Anderson (100H).

Three Falcons – Abby Koch, Barbara Powers and Carly Wells – each set personal best times in the 5000 meters, while Janelle Campbell, Brooke Pleger and Anna Pomento each notched personal records in field events.

As a team, the Falcons' 36 points were enough to finish 11th. Bowling Green ended the meet 11 points ahead of Ball State and just two points behind Central Michigan. Four other teams were within 20 points of BGSU's total.

Kent State won the team championship for the second consecutive year, defeating Eastern Michigan by one point. The one-point margin equals the closest margin ever in the women's team competition.

Award winners and All-MAC teams are listed below.

Up next for Falcon track and field is the NCAA East Regional in two weeks. At this moment, Jessie Rowland (hammer throw) would qualify for the meet. To qualify, an athlete in an individual event must have one of the top 48 marks/times in the region.

More information about the regional will be available at BGSUFalcons.com in the coming days.
