Powers Named Academic All-District For Second Consecutive Year

June 03, 2011 | Women's Track and Field

Barbara Powers, who just completed her fourth and final season with the Bowling Green State University track and field team, has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Second Team for the second consecutive year.

The College Sports Information Directors of America released their annual list of honorees on Thursday afternoon (June 2).

Powers finished her undergraduate academic career at BGSU with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as an exercise science major. During her four years as a Falcon, she was named to the Academic All-MAC team twice (2010, 2011).

Powers' success was not relegated to the classroom. She has her name attached to two school records set during the 2011 outdoor season. First, she set the BGSU record in the 2000 meter steeplechase with a blazing time of 7:04.96 at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge. She then helped the Falcons set a new record in the 4x1600 relay at the prestigious Drake Relays.

Other personal best times set by Powers include a 4:42.47 mark in the 1500 meters. She also ran the mile in 5:05.18 and the 3000 meters in 10:06.39. She also owns BGSU's fifth-best all-time mark in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:55.99).

This marks the third consecutive year (and fifth time in six years) that a Falcon has earned Academic All-District honors.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team is the result of voting by active CoSIDA members. BGSU's district consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and participation in at least 50 percent of a team's events.

Nominees must also have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, they must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their current institution.
