Lane, Powers Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

Tue, Jun, 14 | Women's Track and Field

CLEVELAND, Ohio – On Tuesday afternoon (June 14), the Mid-American Conference announced the 2011 outdoor track and field Academic All-MAC team. This year's team consists of 28 members from all 12 MAC institutions.

For the second consecutive year, Bowling Green State University student-athletes Paige Lane and Barbara Powers were named to the Academic All-MAC team.

Lane completed her undergraduate studies with a 3.976 grade point average at the end of the 2009-10 academic year and has carried a 4.0 average through two semesters of graduate study.

As a javelin specialist, Lane earned her best throw and finish at the 2011 Northwest Ohio Relays. On that day, she placed second with a toss of 34.73 meters. Lane earned two other top five finishes during the outdoor season, at the Ohio Women's Team Challenge (32.89m) and Eastern Michigan Twilight (32.05m).

Lane also placed seventh at the Toledo Invitational and concluded her career as a Falcon with a 15th place finish at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Powers has earned a 4.0 GPA throughout her collegiate career, first as an undergraduate exercise science major and then as she began her pursuit of a graduate degree in sport administration.

During the 2011 outdoor season, Powers set an individual Falcon record in the 2000 meter steeplechase and took part in another record-breaking effort at the Drake Relays. She set a new standard in the steeplechase at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge by completing the run in a mere 7:04.96. At the Drake Relays, Powers ran one leg for the Falcons' 4x1600 meter relay team. The team's time (20:31.38) eclipsed the old BGSU record by less than one second.

In the 3000 meter version of the steeplechase, Powers earned a season-best time of 10:55.99 at the All-Ohio Championships. Then, at the MAC Championships, she placed tenth by finishing the trek in 11:13.35. Powers also ran the 400 hurdles, 1500 meters and 5000 meters at various times during the Falcons' schedule.

Earlier this year, Powers was named to the 2011 Academic All-MAC team for the indoor season, and she is a two-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV team. She plans to continue her graduate studies at the University of Tennessee this fall.

This is the third consecutive year that BGSU has placed multiple athletes on the Academic All-MAC team.

Cami Paulson, who coached Powers and Lane for each of their four seasons as a Falcon, said, “Paige and Barbara have been ideal student-athletes during their careers at BGSU. It is inspiring to see the level of commitment that both young women made to being the best they could be in all areas of their lives.”

To be eligible for Academic All-MAC honors, an athlete must carry a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative GPA and must have completed at least one full season at their current institution. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.

Those athletes who were nominated but not named to the team were given honorable mention status. A total of 55 athletes were named honorable mention this season, including 12 Falcons.
