The Aurora girls may just be the team of the future. They could even be one of the strongest breakthrough teams that the state has seen in a long time.
Coached by Laura Bell Peters, they are loaded with powerhouse underclassmen. At the HOKA, their top seven was made up of only freshmen and sophomores.
From last year’s state meet team that finished sixth, they graduated only Amelia Kilway. The rest were freshmen. All of the pieces are falling in place to make this year even better—this is a more experienced, yet still very young team. After Week 1 of the OATCCC Cross Country Coaches’ Poll, they jumped to #1 in the state for DII.
Audrey Miller is a name that will likely be central to weekly conversation throughout this cross country season. She decided to fully skip over the 18-minute range entirely and clock a personal-best by over 90 seconds at the Hoka Night XC Showcase, running 17:42.80.
Claire Jenkins and Evelyn Jenkins are two frontrunners who also have experience on the state meet course. They finished within a second of one-another at the Avon Lake Earlybird XC Invitational this past weekend.
Mia Paech also came back with a strong personal-best at the HOKA Night XC Showcase and was a scoring member of last year’s state meet team.
Makayla Cicero, Audra Leigh, Haley Koch and Grace Langell have also placed within the top-seven for Aurora through these last two weeks.
The breakthrough for Aurora has already begun—the question now becomes how dominant can they become?
