BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Head Coach Lou Snelling and the Bowling Green State University cross country and track and field programs are proud to formally announce the completion of the teams' coaching staffs.
Snelling said, “I'm excited about the potential this staff has. The enthusiasm, experience, and hunger are there to bring this program back to a competitive level in the conference. The diversity of our backgrounds will only help the program reach its potential.”
Matt Conly will serve as BGSU's throwing program coach for track and field. Conly has several years of experience on both the high school and collegiate level.
Most recently, Conly served as assistant at West Virginia University. While there, he coached the throwing group and also assisted with multi-event athletes. At WVU, Conly coached some of the best athletes in program history.
He coached Terina Miller to school records in the weight and hammer throw and also coached the school's second- and third-best in the discus throw. One of his multi-event athletes, Chelsea Carrier, was a Big East Conference champion in the pentathlon and also earned All-American honors in both the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Conly served as the head coach at New Castle Chrysler High School in New Castle, Ind. (2006-2008) and was an assistant at Muncie (Ind.) Central High School from 2004-2005. Conly is a graduate of Ball State University, where he competed in track and field.
James Williams comes to Bowling Green to serve as an assistant track coach for the sprint, relay, hurdle and jump groups and has over 20 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level.
Most recently, Williams was the head coach for men's and women's track and field at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He was tasked with starting both programs and, in three seasons, led his school to a top-17 ranking among all NJCAA Division I schools in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
His women's teams finished as high as fifth, while his men's teams achieved a top ranking of seventh. His athletes earned eight national championships in individual events and posted 42 All-American performances.
Williams has also served as the head track and field coach at Minnesota State University-Moorhead (2000-2002), Humboldt State University (1990-1999), and Fisk University (1986-1988). Williams served as assistant coach at Humboldt State prior to becoming the head coach and was also an assistant at Southeast Missouri State University from 1983 to 1986.
During his career Williams has also been heavily involved at the professional level. He was selected many times to coach or manage USA national teams, including those that went to the World Championships in Seville, Spain and Edmonton, Canada. Additionally, he was chairman of the USATF Sprint Development Committee from 1997-2008.
Andrea Pereira de Almeida will serve as the assistant coach for the cross country and track and field teams.
She returns to Bowling Green to coach after spending four seasons here as a member of the cross country and track and field teams. While at Bowling Green, de Almeida was one of the Falcons' best distance runners. During her senior cross country season, she was the Falcons' top runner at the Iona Meet of Champions and the team's second-place runner at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Later in her senior season, she earned the track and field team's top two 3000-meter times of the season and won the event at the Tom Wright Classic. She also set a personal record during her final appearance at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
