5 Events to Watch: Girls Division 2

While every event at the state meet is important and fun to watch and each has its little elements and story lines that interest different individuals, but here are five events that should be labeled "Do Not Miss."  If you are a true fan of Track and Field you won't want to miss these events.

 

1. 100m Dash

Prelims on Friday at 2:20p
Finals on Saturday at 1:10pm

Col. Eastmoor’s Aaliyah Barnes is back to defend her title.  She has run a 12.02 this year which is the 4th fastest time in the State.  Senior Lauren Schattinger of Lakeview, last years’ runner-up has qualified, running 12.03.  Last year’s 5th place finisher, Vermillion’s Senior Emily Cunningham is back with a 12.19.

 

2. 4 x 200m

Prelims on Friday at 2:30pm
Finals on Saturday at 1:15pm

The girls’ 4x200 should be exciting with Junior Aaliyah Barnes leading the Eastmoor Academy girls. 1:40.55.  The Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary girl’s are less than a second back with a 1:41.14 and they are closely followed by the Vermilion girl’s with a time of 1:41.54.

 

3. 400m Run

Prelims on Friday 3:00pm
Saturday at 2:25pm

In the 400m, Eastmoor’s Aaliyah Barnes will look to add another gold medal to her collection (in 2011 she won the 100m Dash and the 200m Dash).  She has run a 55.33, which is the 2nd fastest time in the State.  She will be challenged by three other girl’s, all under 57.  Sophomore Oksana Lawrence of  Day. Meadowdale 56.12,  Senior Shavonna  Jackson of Warrensville Hts. 56.10 and sophomore Chelsea Laury of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 56.58.

 

4. 800m

Saturday at 2:25 pm

The girl’s 800m should be a close run with Senior, Tessa Weigand of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary who last weekend set a new Bedford, Region 5 record with a time of 2:12.56.  Junior Kaele Lightfoot of Minerva, the defending champion is back having run a 2:12.42 at last year’s State meet and Celina’s senior, Hanna Fleck, last year’s runner-up returns having run a 2:12.42. 

 

5. Pole Vault

Saturday at 9:00 am

Senior Alyssa McBride of Bryan has vaulted 13-00.50  this year, setting a New All Time Ohio State Record at the Palmer Relays on May 5th.  Six other girls have cleared 11' or better in Division 2.  Urbana's Kaley Moss and Allyson Simmons of Fairless should battle it out to for the silver medal, as these are the only two girls in the group of six that have cleared 11-6 this year.
