Midwest Meet of Champions Preview

The MMOC is loaded once again!

Like a powerful magnet, the 2012 Midwest Meet of Champions has attracted the best teams to this elite cross country competition.  The field is once again littered with many of the top distance runners and cross country teams in Ohio and the surrounding states.  Look for some amazing races on Saturday!

Girls Competition:

This field is outstanding!  Eight of the top 9 schools from the 2011 State meet are at this year’s MMOC!  Defending D1 State champion Brunswick is here.  Defending 2011 MMOC Champion and #1 ranked Mason is back.  So is #1 ranked  and defending D2 State champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.  Add in #3 Hilliard Davidson, #4 Beavercreek, #7 Springboro, #8 Hudson and #10 Dublin Coffman and you can see how competitive this race should be.  Only 5 points separated the top 3 teams (Brunswick, Beavercreek and Mason) at last year’s state meet – they are all here and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary is every bit as good as the D1 teams.  Sacred Heart (Kentucky’s #3 ranked school) and Hurricane (West Virginia’s #3 ranked school) will also field strong teams.  Don’t forget about #20 Magnificat High School which has won this meet multiple times and has several state titles as well.  Mason should be considered the favorite but it should be very competitive up front once again this year.

Caroline Sauers (Hudson) and Rachel Bosworth (Dublin Coffman) each placed in the top 10 at this meet in 2011 and will be among the top individuals to watch this year.  Other favorites include Maggie Allen (Sacred Heart), Sydney Leiher (Beavercreek), Lauren Hoover (Davidson), Rachel Mahle and Lycia Hollon (Springboro), Lauren Wood and Meagan Murphy (Mason), Leah Wallace (Reynoldsburg), Rachel Weber (Coffman) and Marissa Rosetti (Akron St V St M) – all of which have been under 19 minutes this fall.

It will be exciting to see which teams and individuals rise to the occasion this weekend!

Boys Competition:

Perennial power and defending team champion Cleveland St. Ignatius is back this year. They are ranked #3 in the state and always seem to race very well at this meet every year.  Mason (#4), Westerville North (#6) and Olentangy Liberty (#10) should be the favorites in the team race.  The field is very strong and we haven’t mentioned defending state champions Dublin Coffman (D1) and Springfield Shawnee (D2) yet!  Shawnee is currently ranked #1 in the state in D2 and will challenge many of the big schools this week.  Other strong teams include #11 Mentor, #13 Beavercreek, #14 Toledo St. John’s, #21 Hudson and #25 Brunswick along with other D2 ranked teams Akron St Vincent-St Mary (#7), Unioto (#16) and Sheridan (#17).

There are several outstanding individuals that have a chance to win this race.  The dynamic duo of Jacob Dumford and Kent Ford of Westerville North should be near the top.  Andrew Johnston (Olentangy Liberty), John Sotos (Dublin Coffman) sophomore Tevin Brown (Toledo St. John), Jack Miller (St. Ignatius) and Nick Christensen (Hilliard Bradley) should be in the lead pack.  Johnston is the top returning runner from last year’s field.

Other individuals that may challenge the top group this year include sub 16 minute runners Jacob Brumfield (Vandalia Butler), Adam Wise (Lancaster), and Jack Miller (St. Ignatius).  Darkhorses include Michael Tymoski (Springfield Shawnee), Nick Mcafee (Georgetown), and Mike Iacofano (Akron St Vincent-St Mary).   Look for a tight team race and some very quick times from this deep field of outstanding runners!
