Beavercreek, Ohio -- Less than one year remains until the premiere of the Reserve Team Championship race hosted by Beavercreek City Schools on Saturday October 5, 2013.

Beavercreek has formerly hosted invitationals that were held on the first week of school.  This meet was started and managed by the famous Jack Holiday.  Jack turned the cross country teams at Beavercreek into a powerhouse coaching for four decades 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and the new millenium.  He made Beavercreek a regional power on both the men's and women's side, before retiring from teaching and coaching in 2007.  Jack successfully won the state D1 girls cross country title in 1996, led by the Storage twins.  Who have qualified and participated in the last 3 Olympic Trials.

The invite that Jack started went by the wayside as he retired.  The program remained strong and new Coach Howard Russ, who previously coached at Wayne for 12 years, winning 4 cross country district titles, 9 WOL and GWOC track titles, and a state championship in track, is rejuvenating the history and hosting of a cross country meet for Beavercreek City Schools.

At first when Coach Russ started coaching in 2008, the area seemed oversaturated with races.  Until more recently when the Centerville Stampede switched dates from the last regular season meet, usually held the first weekend of October, to the third weekend in September.  This opened up a date in the schedule for the Dayton area and teams around the state.  The only problem with this date is that most teams rest their varsity runners the weekend before the league meets.  Once a lesser known practice only by some cross country teams, has turned into a mass exodus of teams not running their varsity squads to save their legs for the long post-season of league, district, regional, and state meet.  Additionally, post-season meets of Nike Nationals, Footlocker, Mideast Meet of Champions and Junior Olympics have many cross country runners competing into December.  The rest for the varsity athletes is essential and trying to host a quality varsity meet would be counterproductive on the last weekend of the year.

Coach Russ created an idea of a highly competitive meet for the reserve teams and the middle school teams with a twist.  Additionally, the idea of hosting a highly competitive meet for JV runners was appealing to many area coaches and the states best, most competitive, and biggest teams.  The final thought process was to give the JV athletes a day to remember standing on the podium, winning trophies that resembled the state meet trophy, and winning All-State as a JV athlete or freshmen athlete.  With the high participation in high school cross country and many teams having 50 or more athletes on each roster, this type of event has appealed to many schools around the state.  Not only in Ohio, but schools St. Xavier of Louisville and Carmel of Indiana have also expressed interest in attending the JV championships at Beavercreek.

The Beavercreek Cross Country program is proud to announce the Reserve Team Championship race held on October 5, 2013.

1.    Logistically: Where the meet will be held has been narrowed down from six facilities in Beavercreek, Greene County and Dayton areas.  The final facility will be released in March of 2013.

2.    Times:  Before the entries come in by the bucketloads, the meet manager has decided to hold off on the times and number of races.  The race day looks fairly vague and vanilla until the mass number of teams are confirmed.  We have 11 races scheduled for the day with no regard to division.  If the need arises, the meet management may add additional divisions for these races.  The final times will be finalized in March of 2013.

3.    Teams:  The races are open to all teams in Ohio for the first year.  We have decided to only call it the Ohio Reserve Team Championships for the innagural year.  After the first year, we may change the format to scoring it by state.  But our primary goal is to host a high quality, fan friendly, fun, competitive race for JV teams in Ohio.

4.    How the course will be marked:  The course will be marked similar to any premiere race or college race.  There will be two solid lines on each side to border of the course.  The course will be at least 5 meters wide.  The course will have a start that is 600 meters long straightaway and a finish of 500 meters long.  In heavy spots the course will be bordered by mesh fencing.  We have purchased 1000 meters of mesh fencing for this race.

5.    Timing:  The races will be timed by finishtiming.com  The race will feature a finish clock and a finishing participation scroll just like the state meet.  Meet entries will also be conducted on finishtiming.com.  Look for updates for the meet on https://oh.milesplit.com.

6.    Awards:  The awards will resemble the OHSAA state meet trophies and medals.  A podium will resemble the state meet as much as possible.  Awards for the JV, freshmen, and middle school races will both resemble the OHSAA state meet only.  The top finishers in the 2 mile races will be awarded t-shirts as awards.  The 5th and 6th grade races will have ribbons.  4th grade and under will also be presented with ribbons at the finish line.

7.    Reserve Team Banner-  The final award will be the banner purchased for teams to hang in their gymnasium, football field, track or wherever the team would like to display that they won the Reserve Team Championship.  The goal of this award is have it ordered and delivered to the winning teams before the end of the year banquets.
