Division 2 Regional Preview

As a coach and athlete in the state of Ohio, I have spent many years trying to learn who I would be going up against at big races. I wanted to know how each person ran and what were their strengths and weaknesses. I would often do my own little meet previews where I would scour the internet for any resources I could find to help me on my quest. I have decided that as an author on this site it would be nice to provide the members and nonmembers alike with a peek at this weekend's races. I will preface these insights by saying that I do not necessarily think the exact order will be what I put up here, but rather find it to be a statistical analysis of what some expectations may be like for this Saturday. I also do not use season PR's to determine athlete rankings, as I have found this to be a very inaccurate method of prediction. Instead I look at trends and averages, much like the course rating system, in order to determine a prediction. Please note that the times I have listed aren't necessarily what I think the times will be. I just have them used as a way to rank all the runners. I will be ranking top 6 teams as well as top 25 individuals, as this will give the best look at which teams and individuals will have a shot at making it to state. I hope to get some comments going as well, because discussion makes it more fun for everyone!

This might be the most exiciting race of Regional weekend. I think there are 7 legitimate teams that can make it out of this region, and they were all close together pointwise at district. This will come down to who pulls out the best race. Right now on these rankings Woodridge is ranked 7th, but they have a tremendous history of getting it done at the right time, so I would not at all be surprised to see them racing in November. They will be hurt a bit by a lack of a front runner, which could hurt their chances a bit in this race. However, they have an excellent pack and should make it very tough. The CVCA duo have had a tremendous season and have a rare opportunity to go 1-2 in this race. In the end there will be a lot of parents and coaches counting spots to see who had the highest cards and who is going to National Trails.

This is another race that is going to be a close finish. Defiance fields a very strong team, but there are plenty of teams nipping right at their heels. Right now I like Bay as teh 4th team due to a strong pack, but the lack of a top 10 finisher may prove costly. Every place is going to count here. Individually, Avers has won most of the races he has been in all year and it looks unlikely he will lose here. A "1" card may help his team make it to the next level.

I have the fourth spot here coming down to a tiebreak between the same two teams that tied at districts. Athens won their district with the 6th man tiebreak over Unioto, and it very well could happen again here. The top 3 teams look pretty solid here, but that 4th spot is up for grabs and it is anyone's game. Matt Bromley is the clear individual favorite here after winning most of the meets he has been in as well as an impressive showing at MMOC. His only loss in October is to Hardwick in a 2-mile race.

This race appears to be a good mix  on the surface. I have two of the four qualifiers from the Dayton districts, one from Cincinnati and one from Columbus. I do believe Wyoming will make it to state, but it will be close. I feel like the last couple of spots are pretty tight and anyone's game. I do like Ben Stites as the champ. He has been running well lately and backs it up with good results against D1 competition as well.

I think this is an interesting race. The individual champ could be one of a handful of girls, including two teammates. Each has beaten the others at some point and time this season, so it is anybody's guess who gets the win. It should make for an exciting finish. Team-wise SVSM is expected dominate, much like they have all year. Watch that last spot, as all of the contenders' number fives are together. A couple points here or there could spell elation or doom.

This region should also have a tight knit pack between four teams for the last two qualifying spots. Right now I have a leg up to Wauseon due to the fact they boast the projected champion and Napoleon for having two in the top 10. This race should also feature a nice duel at the front between Taylor Vernot and Maddie Britton.

If there was a definition of a wide-open race, this would be it. There are possibilities here where any team in the top 5 or 6 could finish first or they could finish sixth, depending on the race. Each spot becomes that much more precious when the field is this even. It may come down to something as unfortunate as how the weather affects certain runners. Each advantge becomes magnified. Individually we should see the same duel we saw last week between Paige Saho and Katherine Lehman. Maddie Dunlap should be in the mix as well. Good luck, because some deserving team is going to be sitting at home after this one.

This year in region 8 some girls from Columbus will be making the trek west to Troy to compete against Cincinnati and Dayton district girls. This looks to be a couple of duels (one of the Mexican standoff variety). Granville, Oakwood and Tippecanoe should fight for the regional championship and Eaton and Alter duke it out for that last qualifying spot to state. Mary Kate Vaughn has the fastest girls time in the state regardless of division and she should bring home the hardware here. The question here is how will the Columbus schools who are unfamiliar with Troy handle the wind tunnel? It should be another quality race.
