The stage is now set for the 2014 Ohio State XC Championships. We should see exciting races in all of our boys and girls divisions. Here is a breakdown and a preview of the D2 Boys and Girls races.
(The virtual meets do not include individual qualifiers.)
D2 BOYS
INDIVIDUAL RACE PREVIEW
This a difficult race to call. 18 D2 boys are under 16:00 in the State. 9 are under the Milesplit National Elite: Gold standard of 15:45.00. Jr. Joe Bistritz of Chagrin Falls was 2nd last year (16:10.67). He ran 2nd at the Youngstown Regional to CVCA Sr. Ryan Adams. Adams was 7th last year (16:22.62). Bistritz however, has the fastest time in the State of the D2 boys, having run 15:30.00. He is ranked 9th overall. It will be a close race, but the nod goes to Bistritz based upon his D2 State leading time. Adams will run 2nd. 3rd will go to last years #5 runner, Jr. Nick Stricklen of Lexington. He won the Tiffin Region edging Wauseon Sr. Quintin Reiser. Reiser has had an outstanding year and should run 4th. He's ranked 4th in the D2 rankings and 15th overall with a 15:34.94. He was 14th last year. The number five spot should go to Tippacanoe Jr. Mitchell Poynter. He is coming off his Troy Regional win and has the 5th fastest D2 time (15:40.00). He was 27th last year (16:50.42) . Pusing Poynter for the top 5 spot will be the Pickerington Regional winner, Jr. David Magda of Unioto. Magda was 22nd last year (16:44.96) and has the #10 D2 ranking with a 15:48.00. Two other top ten returners also return: Lexington Sr. Zane Sturts was 4th last year (16:18.94) and Wyoming Sr. Ben Stites was 6th (16:22.21).
TEAM RACE PREVIEW
One thing is certain, Defiance will not repeat. Tippacanoe was 2nd last year. They won a very tough Troy Regional beating Granville and Shawnee-Springfield. They are atop the last OATCCC poll and 2nd in the Ohio Milesplit Virtual meet. Tippacanoe should capture the D2 Championship. In the #2 spot will be Lexington. They are coming off a Regional win at Tiffin and their 1-5 runners have split just 53.91 seconds this year. They are ranked #2 in the last OATCCC poll. In the 3rd spot on the podium will be Granville. They were second to Tippacanoe in the Troy Regional. Their 1-5 runners have split 28 seconds this year, but for them to move up into a one or two position, they will all have to be faster. Shawnee-Springfield was 1 point back of Granville in the Troy Region. They should be in the #4 spot, but it is very difficult to pick between them and NDCL, the Youngstown Regional winner and Sheridan, the Pickerington Regional winner. Sheridan may be the sleeper in the D2 boys team race. In the Ohio Milesplit Virtual meet by times, they are 3rd.

D2 GIRLS
INDIVIDUAL RACE PREVIEW
The number one ranked girl in the State in all divisions is Jr. Dominique Clairmonte of Lexington. She will be atop the podium and just may run the fastest time of the day in all divisions. She was out last year due to an injury, but has come back this year with a resolve and determination to make a statement. She has, as she is undefeated this season. She leads the #2 girl, Liberty Center Sr. Brittany Atkinson, by 4.1 seconds, having run 17:29.90. Her time is just over 49 seconds faster than the #2 ranked D2 girl by time, Sr. Claire Lamb of Granville. Lamb is ranked 12th in overall time in the State with a 18:19.00. The #2 spot on the podium should go to Sr. Elyse Black of Jackson. She won the Pickerington Regional and holds the 3rd fastest D2 girls time in the State (18:25.00) and the 17th fastest time overall. She is having a standout year thus far. In her 13 races this year, she has 11 wins, one 2nd and one 4th. Third place should go to Sr. Taylor Vernot of Wauseon who is the defending D2 State Champion (18:04.40). She is ranked 5th in the State by times run with a 18:26.20. She is a experienced, veteran runner and it would not be a surprise if she runs 2nd. SVSM Jr. Rachel Iacofano has had an excellent season and should be on the podium in 4th. She holds the #11 time in the State (18:41.83). She was 7th last year.(18:49.90). Fifth will go to Lexington So. Mackenna Curtis-collins. She is the #2 runner for Lexington and is ranked 7th in the State by time with a 18:37.90. She has experience from her 23rd place finish last year.
Watch for Regional winners Jr. Micaela DeGenero of Granville and Sr. Sammy Bockoven of CVCA to be up front and taking postions on the podium. They ran 45th and 46th respectively at State last year and coming off of their Regional wins will be positioned to place in the top ten, even top five.
TEAM RACE PREVIEW
Granville's 1-5 runners have split just 30 seconds this year. They should win the D2 championship, especially if Sr. Clair Lamb, who has the 2nd fastest D3 girls time this year is at her best. Lamb has run 18:19.00. she is ranked 12 th in the State overall but ran 12th at Regionals and was the #4 runner on the Granville team. The Granville girls are atop the last OATCCC poll, the #1 ranked team on Ohio Milesplit and in the virtual team meet. They were led at Regionals by Micaela De Genero, who won the Troy Regional. The Granville girls were 10th last year, but bring too much speed and depth to the State meet to not win it all.
Lexington, led by the #1 ranked girl in Ohio, Dominique Clairmonte, should be the #2 team in the State. They won the Tiffin Regional with just 52 points, running 1,3, 14, 15 and 19th. Thier 6th and 7th girls were 21st and 25th. They were #4 last year.
SVSM should be in the #3 spot. They are ranked number three in the OATCCC pol and in our virtual meet. They are the defending team champion, and won the Youngstown Regonal narrowly defeating Woodridge 53 to 56, but just just can't match the Granville girls.
The #4 & 5 spots are difficult to call. It will be a battle between Athens, Morgan, Shawnee Springfield and Woodridge. Woodridge may ge the #4 nod as they were just back of SVSM by 3 points in the Tiffin Regional.
