The meet of the weekend in the Midwest did not disappoint. The Midwest Meet of Champions is the premier early September meet in the Midwest, and this year, Fishers (IN) and Magnificat (OH) won the two team titles. Fishers used a strong duo up front of Cale Allen (Sr.) and Drew Shields (Jr.) to take home the team title, while Magnificat packed it up, placing their top five in the top 25 spots.
Individually, Brian Himelright (Sr., Woodridge, OH) won the boys race in 15:35 over Joe Jackson's (Sr., Hilliard Darby, OH) 15:45. Himelright and Jackson, along with Allen and Sheilds, ran together in the top group until two miles, when Himelright pressed the pace and broke the Fishers tandem. Himelright pulled away from Jackson over the last half mile to take home the victory. Allen and Shields finished 3-4 respectively.
Meanwhile on the girls side, Erika Alpeter (Sr., Hilliard Darby, OH) was in the lead and looked like she could have a very decisive victory in hand, until she faded badly over the last mile, while Emily Pritt (Sr., Massillon Jackson, OH) finished very strong and beat Alpeter in the closing 100 meters of the race, 18:19 - 18:21.
