Galion Cross Country Festival - Moore & Gigandet Headline a High-Powered Meet!

While some Ohio schools are headed to Louisville this weekend for the Trinity / Valkyrie Invitational (HS), there are a full slate of meets scheduled in State as well.  Hopefully the weather cooperates, but it's looking like rain may be in the forecast for the State.  But, as the temperatures cool in mid-September, we start to move into the meat of the Ohio XC season.  We will be at two high-powered Ohio meets:  the Galion Cross Country Festival and the Boardman Spartan Invitational.  We'll preview the Boardman meet in a separate article.  Here is a look at Galion.

The Galion meet features OH #3 and US #13 Sr. Hunter Moore of Olentangy Orange. Moore leads his team comes into the meet with an OH #5 Team ranking. Last weekend, Moore ran a 15:13.  I don't think he can challenge Andrew Jordan's 14:44.70 record run from last year, but weather permitting, he may go under 15:00 on the Amanns Park course.  He'll have to do it alone and should go wire to wire in this one.

In the team race, the Olentangy Orange boys should, OH #5, will have some competition from another OCC team, Hilliard Bradley.  Bradley is ranked OH #8

On the girls side, OH #1 Jr. Morgan Gigandet of Troy, who was off last weekend, should go wire to wire like Moore.  she likes to go out hard and push the pace.  She was 3rd last year in 17:56.90, behind Lexington's Dominique Clairmonte, who won in 17:39 and Hilliard Davidson's India Johnson, who was 2nd in 17:44.70. Johnson is running at the Trinity meet in Louisville.  Jr. Leah Roter of Beechwood leads the State with a 17:36. Gigandet will have to do it alone, but just may get into the mid-17's.

The Olentangy Liberty girls should win the team race.  They are OH #6.

The boy's D2 Team race features OH #2 Lexington, #4 Napoleon, #6 Heath and #9 Shelby.  This just may be the race of the day.  In the individual race, OH D2 #3 Sr. Jacob Fellers of Heath's and Sr. Taylor Hopkins (OH #6) come in with the only two entries with times under 16:00 this season.  Feller has run 15:48.00 and Hopkins 15:50.90.  They will be challenged by: OH #9-12:  So. Kyle Johnston of Lexington, Jr. Zach Applegate of BGHS, Jr. Ryan Johnston of Lexington and Sr. Jonny Lukins of Granville.

The D2 girl's race should be exciting as well.  The Lexington girls are ranked D2 #5 and are led by D2 #4 Sr.  Mackenna Curtis-Collins. Granville is D2 #3 and Marlington D2 #12. In the individual race, Curtis-Collins will have her hands full with D2 #4 Jr. Sydnee Mangette of Liberty Union and West Holmes Sr. Michelle Hostettler.  Hostettler was 3rd last year at State and is the leading girls returner from the State meet.

In the D3 races, Colonel Crawford Jr. Chad Johnson returns as the defending champion.  Johnson ran 15:52.00 in winning last year and is D3 #1, OH #14 with a 15:36.74.  It should be Johnson's race to win, but Carey Sr. Trevor Cook is D3 #4.  He's run under 16:00 and he should challenge Johnson, along with D3 #6 and #8, Sr. Wyat Harmon of Fredericktown and Sr. Austin Hallabrin of Mt. Gilead.

The boy's team race includes Fredericktown D3 #3, Carey #8 and Seneca East, #10.

The girl's race features the #3 and 4 D3 girl's teams in the State, Northmor and Fredericktown.  The D3 girl's individual race features Fairfield Christian Sr. Kyleigh Edwards.  Edwards should set the pace and win.  She has run five times this year, with four wins and a second.  Her only loss came came in the Newark Invitational and it was to D2 Sydnee Mangette who is one of the favorites in the D2 race.  Edwards is ranked D3 #4.
