Austin Goolsby of Hillsboro High School competes in the Long Jump and Pole Vault events.

Austin Goolsby is a Long Jump and Pole Vault athlete from Hillsboro High School.  Austin finished 3rd in the Long Jump event and 3rd in the Pole Vault competition at the D2 / D3 OATCCC Indoor State Championship in Akron.  Goolsby won both the Long Jump and Pole Vault events at the 2017 MileSplit Scholastic Showcase at Spire and he has impressive P.R.'s of 22-01.50 (indoor) in the Long Jump and 16-02 (indoor) in the Pole Vault.  Austin Goolsby recently spoke with MileSplit Ohio about his accomplishments to this point in his track and field career and what he's hoping to achieve in the future.

MileSplit Ohio: Describe your indoor season.  Did your results live up to your expectations going in? What are you most proud of from what you accomplished?

Austin: Going into the indoor season, I had my mind set on clearing 16 feet in the Pole Vault event.  I was confident it could happen and when I finally cleared at that bar, a mental barrier was broken.  I was very happy with my indoor season as I cleared a personal best of 16 feet 2 inches.

MileSplit Ohio: What events are you focusing on during the outdoor season?  Talk about what goals you have in place that you hope to accomplish.

Austin: During outdoor season I have mainly been focusing on the Long Jump and Pole Vault.  In the Pole Vault, I set a goal to win the state championship and clear 17 feet by season's end.  In the Long Jump, I have set a goal of jumping 23 feet.

Austin Goolsby demonstrates excellent form and concentration during his vault attempt.

MileSplit Ohio: Discuss what your typical week of training resembles.

Austin: When I train during the week I usually pick one day to do short / basic drills and a day of full approach jumping.  This year we have the privilege of using a new weight room at our school so I'm making sure to take advantage of this great facility.  During the school day I can go to the weight room during my study hall to lift and this has helped me to stay strong and conditioned.

Austin Goolsby is putting in the training that's necessary to achieve his lofty goals.

MileSplit Ohio: Who has helped you to reach the level that you've attained to this point in your track and field career?

Austin: My parents and all of my coaches have helped me a great deal with my track and field progress.  Dave Garcia, Austin Hicks and Terry Wasson have helped me out tremendously during the indoor season to get to the point that I'm at now.  I've also benefited from the great athletes who I compete against at our school's meets.

Austin Goolsby credits his coaches for the progress that he's made in track and field.

MileSplit Ohio: What are your long term goals related to track and field?

Austin: My long term goals are to become a state champion and to become an All American at Nationals.  I would also like to compete in college at the NCAA level and I'd eventually like to compete at the Olympics, as well.

Hillsboro's Austin Goolsby hopes to one day compete on the international stage.
