Endurance Sports Wayne Invitational Preview (5/1/2009)

This year’s Endurance Sports Wayne Invitational may go down as one of the best ever, and that’s saying a lot, considering who has set foot on this track in the past.  Names like Piqua’s Brandon Saine (meet record holder in 100 meter dash 10.34 and 200 record in 21.15 and 400 meter dash in 46.80) and Quinn Pitcock, Middletown’s Scott and Jeff See (both held meet record in the 1600, Scott held the 3200 meter record at 9:27.38 and Jeff holds the 800 meter record in 1:53.99), Dayton Christian's Luttrell brothers, Walter and John (Walter currently holds the meet record in the 3200 in a time of 9:24) Springboro’s Chad Balyo (current meet record holder in 1600 at 4:13.20), Yellow Springs’s Sam Borchers, Wayne’s Jason Craig, Jeremy Richardson, Jason Hodges (meet record holder in 110 hurdles in 13.50 and 300 hurdles in 37.90), Marcus Freeman and Mike Mickens,  Vandalia Butler’s Jimmie Pacifico (current meet record holder in the shot put 68-11.5 and discus 175-5), Miamisburg Dave Bruton and Mike Wiley,  and that’s just the young men.

For the ladies, Troy Christian’s Mackenzie Wills (who set the Division 3 state record in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet 6 inches here in 2008), Mason’s Angela Bizzarri (holds the meet record in the 1600 in 5:04.30), Cleveland Collinwood Girls (own meet records in 4x100 relay 47.99, 4x200 relay 1:40.60, and 4x400 relay 3:53.40) and Wayne’s Kelly Plummer (meet record holder in shot put 46-4.25).

Headlining this year’s meet will be Vandalia Butler’s Danny Neff and Mason’s Zach Wills.  Neff, the defending 2008 outdoor state champion in the 1600 run and 2009 state indoor champion in the 1600 and 800 run, has already ran  4:09.86 in the one mile run this year.  Wills is the defending 2008 state cross country champion and 2008 outdoor 3200 meter run champion.  Wills owns marks of 4:15.70 in the mile run and 9:13.58 in the two mile run.  Wills has also run 4:13 on a 1600 leg of a relay.

Also competing are Centerville’s Shawn Roberts (4:25.18 pr), Vandalia Butler’s Doug Norris (4:25), Carroll’s Andrew Trick (4:18.85 pr), Tipp City’s Jason Salyer (4:29.47), Mason’s Ed Carlin (4:30.02 pr in 1600), and Sidney’s Aaron Dinzeo (4:32.38 pr in 1600).

The sprints will be a showdown of Northmont’s Mark Mays, Wayne’s Demoye Bogle and Lebanon’s Chase Cochran.  Mays is the defending state indoor champion in the 60 meter dash, while Bogle was runner up.  Cochran owns the 2nd fastest time of 10.68 in the state in the 100 meter dash so far this year.  Bogle owns a best of 10.76, while Mays has gone 10.66.  All three anchor 4x100 relays that are tops in the state.

Other notables are Dee Jay Hunter (10.74) of Middletown, and Brad Hinegarnder (10.98) of Beavercreek.

The pole vault showcases Jack Greenlee of St. Xavier, the 2008 state runner-up, and owns a best of 15 feet 1 inch, Greenville’s Kevin Leland, who owns a best of 14-8 and Graham Morgan of Lebanon who’s best is 14-6.  Also clearing 14 feet are Centerville Nick Arnold and Bryan Miller.

The throws should be a showdown between Alters’ Chris Borland. Mason’s Kendrick Davis, Centerville’s Mike Bennett and Bellbrook’s Sam Longo in the shot put.  Longo is defending meet champion at 58 feet 4 inches, while Borland was second last year in 54 feet 5.5 inches. Both Davis and Bennett have gone over 50’ numerous times this year.

Longo has gone over 166’ in the discus, which leads a stacked field.  King’s Michael Kidder (151-6), Centerville’s Michael Bennett (160-0) and Wayne’s Jared Harrison (158-10) and Ryan Bitsko (153-4), round out the packed field.

Cleveland Collinwood girls teams bring down a fearsome relay unit, let by hurdle elitist, Amber Smith.  Smith owns personal best times of 14.50 in the 100 hurdles and 43.52 in the 300 hurdles.  Princeton’s Claudia Saunders has gone 14.44 already.  Wayne’s Sierra Tunstall (15.15 pr) and Mariah Dallas (15.40 pr), as well as Bethel’s Kylie Kopp (15.60 pr) Mason’s duo of Erin Milner and Rachel Harley (15.07 and 15.95, respectively) and Fabia McDonald of Middletown who has gone 15.24 to round out the top 8.

In the field events, Wayne’s Alexis Thomas leads the throws with 135-11 in the discus and 38-8 in the shot put, and Northmont’s Katie Henrich’s 11 feet jump leads (last year’s pr) the women’s pole vault.

Just like the young men’s sprints, the ladies have a few that might threaten the meet record of 11.96 in the 100 dash.  Wayne’s Olyvia Griffin (pr of 12.2 in 100) and Xenia’s Brittany Latimer (12.56 pr 100) will try to catch Springfield’s Shanay Portis who owns a pr of 12.02.  The three will also showdown in the 200 meter dash.

Sprint relays should come down to Collinwood, Wayne, Northmont, Xenia and Princeton.  Mason, Fairmont, Centerville and Alter should battle it out in the 4x800 relay.
