Week In Review: Ohioans at Nike Outdoor Nationals

Boys 5000m

 

Senior Julian Meyer of Revere, running in his first 5000m since finishing third at the NSIC meet, finished 15:25.54 for 12th place in the 5000m race on Thursday night that opened the meet. 

 

Friday

Girls 4x800m Relay Emerging Elite

 

The Canton GlenOak team of Emily Mazzaferri, Stephanie Noussais, Jessica Dunkle and Reilyn Boone finished 11th with a time of 10:07.05.

 

Boys 4x800m Relay Emerging Elite

 

Massillon Perry's team of Chase Daniels, Brandon Wollenberg, Justin Eddy and Josh Tormasi ran an 8:08.45, finishing seventh in their heat and 12th overall.

 

Girls 4x200m Relay

 

Withrow and Bishop Hartley lined up head to head in the third and fastest heat of the girls 4x200m relay.  Bishop Hatley's team of Maya Pedersen, Chesna Sykes, Ashlee Hoffman and Aisha Cavin ran a season best time of 1:38.56 to finish third.

Withrow's team that consisted of Jade Clingman, Jonnique Lawrence, Brittany Smith, and Genesis Calhoun improved on their best time of the year by running a blazing fast 1:37.00 to finish second.

 

Girls 100m Hurdles Emerging Elite

 

Senior Paige Coleman fo Bishop Hartley ran a 15.22 to finish sixth in her heat and twelfth overall.

 

Senior Danheisha Harding of Chaminade Julienne won her heat and qualified in second to the finals by running a 14.75.  In the finals Harding  finished in 14.66, just .02 seconds off of her PR to win the girls 100m Hurdles Emerging Elite.

 

Girls 400m Emerging Elite

 

Bishop Hartley Freshman Maya Pedersen finished third in her heat and 28th overall with a time of 1:00.62.

 

Senior Jhazmyn Anderson of Mt. Vernon finished fifth in her heat and 18th overall by running a 58.76.

 

Ashlee Hoffman a senior from Bishop Hartley finished third in her heat and 8th overall in a time of 57.49.

 

Boys 400m Emerging Elite

 

Bishop Hartley senior Dominic Colvin ran a 48.60 to finish third in his heat and fifth overall.

 

Girls 100m Dash

 

Ohio Division 1 State Champion Kandace Thomas, a sophomore from GlenOak ran a 12.30 to finish 5th in her heat and 21st overall.

 

Rhodes senior Mahagony Jones and Chesna Sykes, a junior from Bishop Hartley both finishe second in their respective heats and qualified for the finals.  Jones' 11.69 and Sykes' 11.76 were the fifth and seventh fastest times in the prelims.

 

In the finals, Jones finished 6th in a time of 11.94, and Sykes finished 8th in a time of 12.02.

 

Boys 100m Dash

 

Gahanna Lincoln junior Blake Heriot won his heat and finished third overall in a time of 10.63.

 

Girls 100m Hurdles

 

Danae Rockwell, a senior from Mt. Vernon took fifth in her heat by running 15.16, which was good enough for 27th overall.

 

Junior Xerina Hughey of Hilliard Darby finished third in her heat and 14th overall with a time of 14.45.

 

Collinwood junior Amber Smith finished 9th overall and third in her heat with a time of 14.23.

 

Girls 1600m Sprint Relay

 

The Canton GlenOak team of Kandace Thomas, Emily Mazzaferri, Stephanie Noussais and Reilyn Boone finishe seventh in their heat and 16th overall in a time of 4:16.27.

 

Withrow's team of Genesis Calhoun, Jade Loveless, Jalesha Jarmon and Skyler Willis also finished seventh in their heat with a time of 4:06.75, which was good enough for 11th overall.

 

Girls Shot Put Emerging Elite

 

Withrow freshman D'Monami Gardner finished third with a throw of 39-4.  Gardner was the highest finishing freshman in the event.

 

Boys Hammer Throw

 

Kings senior Michale Kidder finished seventh in his flight and 18th overall with a toss of 152-6.

 

Dustin Brode, a junior from Canfield threw the ball and chain a personal best of 169-11, which placed him 10th in his heat and 12th overall.

 

Girls High Jump Prelims

 

Sohpomores Taylor Burke (Medina) and Kalpana Beach (Westlake) both qualified to the finals by clearing 5-6.5.

 

Withrow senior Alyssa Hall was the final qualifier for the finals by clearing 5-4.5.

 

Girls Triple Jump

 

Collinwood junior Erin Busbee, fresh off of her trip to represt the US in the Caribean Scholastic Invitational, jumped 37-2.25 to finish 9th in her heat and 24th overall.

 

Jalesha Jarmon, a senior from Withrow won her flight on the first jump with a hop, skip and jump of 42-1.5, which was a PR by over a foot and a half.  Jarmon's jump was the leading jump going into finals.  Jarmon passed her first two jumps in the finals as she remained in the lead, but in the final round of jumping Andrea Guebelle, a senior from Washington took the lead at 42-10.25.  Jarmon gave it one more attempt, but was not able to muster a nearly 43 foot effort and finished second overall.

 

Girls Shot Put

 

Versailles senior Christine Borchers, the recent Division 3 champion in the shot put, finished 11th in her flight and 14th overall with a heave of 40-4.75.

 

Boys Discus

 

Dustin Brode of Canfield set a personal record by unleashing a throw of 172-9 to make the finals and finish 8th in the competition.

 

Boys 2 Mile

 

Zach Wills the sophomore sensation from Mason showed that he belongs in major competitions on the national level.  Wills ran a blistering 8:55.18, only finishing behind Alaska's Trevor Dunbar (8:49.79).  Wills was able to hold off Lukas Verzbicas, the super freshman who set the indoor 5000m record at Nike Indoor Nationals and also the freshman 2 Mile record less than a week ago at the Midwest Distance Gala.

Boys 4x100m Relay Prelims

 

The Bishop Hartley team of Noah Key, Omar Lane, Rufus Walls and Isaiah Walls finished seventh in their heat and 28th overall in a time fo 43.42.

 

Girls 4x100m Relay Prelims

 

The top team in Division 1 and the top team in Division 2 both competed in the 4x100m Relay at Nike.  Unfortunately the two teams weren't in the same heat, but will be in the same heat tomorrow during the finals.

 

Withrow's girls team of Genesis Calhoun, Brittany Smith, Jonnique Lawrence and Jade Clingman ran a blazing time of 45.86, a season best time,  to qualify in second spot to the finals on their way to winning their heat.

 

Bishop Hartley's team, made up of Chesna Sykes, Aisha Cavin, Ashlee Hoffman and CharAnna Dixon qualified in the third spot by winning their heat and running a season best time fo 46.82.

 

Collinwood also ran in the 4x100 and finished fourth in their heat in a time of 48.10.  The team of Erin Busbee, Amirah Harbour, Shannon Willis and Tierra Royal finished 10th overall.

 

Girls Pole Vault

 

Midpark Senior Domenica Rossi bettered her personal record by a quarter of an inch when she cleared 12-3.25, which was good enough for fourth place.

 

Boys High Jump Prelims

 

Toledo Rogers senior and Ohio High School record holder, Erik Kynard, cleared 6-6.75 to qualify for finals on Saturday. 

 

Seniors Tyler McIntosh (Hilliard Darby) and Jakob Leon (Columbiana) did not achieve the qualifying mark.  McIntosh succesfully cleared 6-4.75, while Leon cleared the opening height of 6-2.75.

 

Girls 4x800m Relay

 

The Stow-Munroe Falls team of Jessica DuHamel, Abby Koch, Katie Wensigner and Katie Betts finished 10th in their heat and eleventh overall in a time fo 9:14.22.

 

Boys 4x800m Relay

 

The team from Wadsworth fnished tenth in their heat and 21st overall.  Aaron Tipton, Jacob Sussman, Christopher Goshia and Jake Hiltner combined for an 8:08.59,

 

GlenOak's team of Kyle Esber, Chris Noussais, Marcus Mazzaferri and Christian Jones finished third in their heat and third overall by cruising to the finish in 7:45.11.  The time is less than .20 seconds slower than their state meet time from two weeks ago.

 

Saturday

 

Boys 4xMile Relay

 

Wadsworth's team of Jacob Sussman, Robert Over, Adam Graff and Cristopher Goshia finished ninth in their heat by running an 18:49.55, which placed them 22nd overall.

 

 Girls 800m Sprint Medley

 

 The Walnut Hills team of Nicole Patterson, Shauniece Steele, Ashley Liverpool and Jaelynne Johnson finished fourth in their heat and fourth overall in a time of 1:44.07.

 

Withrow also lined up in in the same heat as Walnut Hills.  Withrows team of Genesis Calhoun, Brittany Smith, Jade Clingman and Jonnique Lawrence ran an impressive 1:41.73, finishing over a second and a half ahead of the second fastest team.

Boys 800m Sprint Medley

 

The team from Bishop Hartley, which consisted of Noah Key, Omar Lane, Rufus Walls and Dominic Colvin finished sixth in their heat and ninth overall by running a 1:32.83.

 

Boys 2000m Steeplechase

 

Massillon Perry senior Josh Tormasi, running in his first ever steeplechase event, finished third in his heat and third overall by running 5:56.24, which is the fastest time by an Ohioan this year, and currently ranks third in the nation.

Boys 800m Emerging Elite

 

East Canton junior J. B. DeRosa finished sixth in his heat and 23rd overall by running the 800m in 1:57.49.

 

Worthington Christian senior Jacob Rider ran a 1:59.65 to place sixth in his heat and 28th overall.

 

Girls Hammer

 

Both Carly and Erin Pendleton competed in the Hammer throw.  Carly, the sophomore, finished with a throw of 128-10, which placed her fifth in her flight and 17th overall.

 

The older Pendleton, senior Erin, finished sixth in her flight and sixth overall with a  throw of 149-10.

 

Girls 200m Dash

 

Chesna Sykes, a junior from Bishop Hartley, qualified for th finals of the girls 200m Dash in the eighth and final spot by running a 24.40 and finishing second in her heat.  Sykes time beat out the ninth place finisher by .003 of a second (.395 to .398).

 

Boys 200m Dash

 

Both Rufus Walls (senior, Bishop Hartley) and Blake Heriot (junior, Gahanna-Lincoln) qualfied for the finals of the 200m Dash .  Walls won his heat and is seeded fourth going into the finals with a time of 21.50 seconds.

 

Heriot qualified in the second to the finals by finishing second in his heat, running a personal record time of 21.05 seconds.

 

Boys High Jump Finals

 

As expected by most Ohioans, Toledo Rogers senior and Kansas State bound, Erik Kynard won the event by clearing 7-3.25 on his final attempt.

Girls Discus

 

Ohio had four female athletes throwing the discus, all four placed in the top twelve in the copetition, while two of those four earned All-American honors finishing in the top six spots. 

 

Jessica Molyet, a junior from St. Joseph Central Catholic finished ninth in her flight and twelfth overall with a toss of 129-10.

 

Carly Pendleton, a sophomore from Woodmore finished third in her flight and eleventh overall with a throw of 131-0.

 

Placing sixth in the event was Brunswick senior Hillary Perrea with a throw of 133-9.

 

Taking the silver medal was Erin Pendleton, who has been consistently in the 160 foot range all season, unleashing a throw of 161-6.

 

Girls 400m Hurdles

 

Collinwood teamates Amber Smith (junior) and Tiera Royal (senior) finished second and third respectively in their heats. 

 

Royal finished the race in 1:04.84 to finish 25th overall, while Smith finished fifth overall by running 1:01.61, the fastest time by an Ohioan this year.

 

Boys 400m Hurdles

 

Hilliard Darby senior Jordan Rispress finished second in his heat and second overall by setting a personal record time of 51.54 seconds, which is the fastest time by an Ohian and second fastest time in the nation this year.

Girls 4x100m Relay Finals

 

Withrow and Bishop Hartley both finished how they qualified for the finals.  Bishop Hartley's team of Chesna Sykes, Aisha Cavin, Ashlee Hoffman and CharAnna Dixon finished third in a time of 45.98, a new season best time for Bishop Hartley.

 

Withrows team of Genesis Calhoun, Brittany Smith, Jonnique Lawrence and Jade Clingman ran another season best time of 45.58 seconds to capture runner up honors.

 

 Girls 800m

 

Natalie Zidd, a freshman from Medina Highland, ran 2:16.29 to finish seventh in her heat and 20th overall.

 

Stow-Munroe Falls sophomore Katie Betts finished fifth in her heat and 13th overall by running 2:13.27.

 

Bekka Simko, a Gilmour Academy junior ran a personal best time of 2:11.70 to finish fourth in her heat and 11th overall.

 

Boys 800m

 

River Valley - Caledonia senior Zach Lathrop finished eleventh in his heat and 38th overall by running a time of 1:59.14.

 

Junior Seth Butler of Liberty-Benton ran 1:57.54 to finish ninth in his heat and 35th overall.

 

Devin Snack, a junior from Brunswick finished the two lap race in a time of 1:55.80 to finish tenth in his heat and 33rd overall.

 

St. Ignatius senior Declan Murray finished seventh in his heat and 26th overall in a time of 1:54.70.

 

Moise Frish, a senior from Whitmer had the best showing by an Ohioan in the 800m by finishing fourth in his heat and 11th overall and running 1:52.71.

 

 Girls 400m Dash

 

Walnut Hills junior Ashley Liverpool finished third in her heat and 16th overall covering the lap in 55.84 seconds.

 

Senior Mahagonay Jones of Rhodes won her heat and finished sixth overall to earn All-American status by running 54.52 seconds.

 

Girls High Jump Finals

 

Medina Sophomore Taylor Burke tied for seventh in the high jump by clearing 5-4.5.

 

Kalpana Beach, a sophomore form Westlake earned All-American status by clearing 5-6.5 on her second jump, which tied her for fourth overall in the competition.

 

Girls 1 Mile

 

North Royalton sophomore Hannah Neczypor finished ninth by running a 4:56.50.

 

Boys 1 Mile

Strongsville junior Colby Alexander finished in a personal record time for the 1 Mile race with a time of 4:23.29, which placed him 18th overall.

 

Senior Danny Neff of Vandalia-Butler finished tenth with a time of 4:16.09.

 

Girls 200m Dash

 

Chesna Sykes, a junior from Bishop Hartley finished eighth in the finals with a time of 24.37 seconds.

 

Boys Pole Vault

 

Solon senior Chadd Pierce finished tied for twelfth by clearing 14-8.75 on his second attempt at that height.

 

Boys Shot Put

 

Ohio Division 1 state champion, Canfield junior Dustin Brode, finished sixth in his flight and fourteenth overall with a throw of 57-0.25.

 

Ohio Division 3 state champion, DJ Duke, a senior from River earned his All-American status by finishing sixth in the competition with a theave of 66-2.5.

 

Boys 200m Dash

Rufus Walls, a Bishop Hartley senior finished seventh in a time of 21.50.

 

Blake Heriot closed strong on champion Dentarius Locke, but had to settle for silver and a personal best time of 20.92 seconds to earn All-American status for the second time this weekend.

 

Girls Long Jump

 

Erin Busbee, a junior from Collinwood won her flight and finished 13th overall with a jump of 18-3.75.

 

Withrow senior Jalesha Jarmon finished tenth in her flight and eleventh overall by leaping 18-5.75.

 

 Girls 4x400m Relay

 

The Collinwood team of Tiera Royal, Amirah Harbour, Chanae Gaine and Amber Smith ran a season best time of 3:50.46 to finish first in their heat and eighth overall.

 

Withrow's team of Jade Clingman, Jade Loveless, Skyler Willis and Jonnique Lawrence ran season best time by over two seconds finish fourth in their heat and fourth overall with a time of 3:45.62.
