(Taylor Ewert and the rest of the Midwest girls spoke with MileSplit's Bryan Deibel pre-meet)
One of the country's two championship meets is in the books, as Nike Cross Nationals went down this past weekend at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Oregon. Ohio was well represented in the individual races with some of the top athletes in the state, Taylor Ewert, Vincent Mauri and Ryan Adkins all lining-up.
Taylor Ewert got things started with a terrific third place finish due to her 17:06.70 clocking. Ewert, who's scheduled to compete at this weekend's Foot Locker National Championship, trailed only New York's Katelyn Tuohy and Kelsey Chmiel in the overall standings. This was the second trip to NXN for the 2018 DI State Champion; last year, as a sophomore, Ewert placed eighteenth.
In the men's race that followed, Vincent Mauri and Ryan Adkins set out for the last 5K cross country competition of their high school careers. And they made the most of the opportunity; while racing against the best runners from coast to coast, both athletes finished inside the top 40. Mauri went 15:31.50 for twenty-ninth place and Adkins was close behind in thirty-sixth due to his 15:37.40 effort. The experience at NXN will no doubt pay big dividends for both athletes as they move on to the next level. Mauri has committed to Arizona State and Adkins will represent Butler University next year.
