Joe Micca Selected As Nominee For The 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Joe Micca's efforts on the field and in the community netted him a nomination for the 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
John Carroll University senior center Joe Micca has been selected as a nominee for the 2009 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team for his efforts on the field and in the community.

Micca was one of 106 athletes from all levels of collegiate football recognized as nominees for the Good Works Team, which honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.

"Allstate and the AFCA have created a partnership of common interests and both organizations are proud to honor the off-the-field achievements of college football players and at all levels," said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate. "Allstate shares a genuine commitment to the community with these 106 student-athletes, and we encourage them to continue their benevolent efforts."

The total of 106 student-athletes recognized surpasses all previous single-season nominee totals in the 18-year history of the award. The 2009 class of nominees represents 41 states, including Washington, D.C., and 45 college athletic conferences.

Micca, who started and played in the first nine games of the 2008 campaign and was both an Academic All-OAC winner and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV selection, was honored for his numerous involvements in volunteer work. At John Carroll, he is a member of the Knights of Columbus and Seeds of Hope -- a mentoring program at JCU that is partnered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland. Micca also has been actively involved with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Cultivating Community projects in Cleveland.

At home in Rochester, New York, the former McQuaid Jesuit High School standout has been a physical therapist assistant for University Sports Medicine, a Friends of Strong Memorial Hospital volunteer, and a Magis Program volunteer at a local elementary school.

Micca was one of two Ohio Athletic Conference football players to be nominated for the 2009 Good Works Team, joining Wilmington Colleges's Billy Blackburn.

From these 106 nominees, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will be responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams - one composed of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and a combined team representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.
