(Watch Taylor Ewert persevere in trying conditions for the 3200 victory)
Ohio athletes swept the 3200 contests on day one at Kentucky's Eastern Relays. Despite encountering heavy rain and high winds, both Vincent Mauri and Taylor Ewert produced big efforts on route to crossing the line first.
In ladies action, the pre-race favorite Ewert led from the opening gun and never let up on her way to a 10:45.58 performance. On an evening which did not cater to fast times due to the adverse weather, Ewert still managed to notch an Ohio No. 2 clocking.
On the men's side, Mauri made a definitive move with about 1km to go and cruised in for the win in 9:12.28. The senior from Howland outpaced a stellar collection of distance runners that included Jake Renfree (Knoxville Catholic, TN) and Silas Winders (Henry County, TN). Mauri's result represents a new Ohio No. 1 time.
