Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC) confirmed that the 2020 Mid-East Cross Country Championships, originally scheduled for November 21st at Indian Riffle Park, has been canceled.
The OATCCC's leadership group were informed recently by members of the Illinois and Michigan coaches association's that those states would not be able to make the trip to Kettering due to Covid-related travel restrictions.
"With great regret, the OATCCC has chosen to cancel this year's Mid-East meet, as other states would be unable to attend and thus the meet would not have lived up to the standards that we have all come to expect," said OATCCC president Doug Joy.
The annual showcase features senior class all-stars from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in a scored team competition a few weeks after their respective state championship meets have taken place. Known for its high caliber of talent and friendly rivalry among athletes from the region's states, the Mid-East meet dates all the way back to 1986, according to the historical summary on its home site.
The cancellation of this year's meet follows a similar fate experienced by some of Ohio's major regular season invitationals, including Legends, Saturday Night Lights, the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, and the McGowan Invitational, among others.
"The OATCCC is navigating our way through very challenging times and we hope our coaches and athletes understand that we are trying to do what is best for our sport", said Joy.
The next edition of the Mid-East Cross Country Championships is scheduled for Saturday, November 20th, 2021.
