Recap: OATCCC Division II/III Indoor State Championships

Madeira after winning the Girl's 4x200m Relay

Handing Things Off

Handing things off to the final piece of this recap of the OATCCC Division II/III Indoor State Championships, as per usual, all of SPIRE got quite a show with the relays, with the Glenville Boy's 4x400m and 4x200m Relays, Marlington Boys and Salem Girls 4x800m, Madeira's 4x200m Relay, and Cleveland Heights Beaumont's Girls 4x400m Relay.

Starting with Glenville, they made their presence known immediately in both relays, and solidified that with two wins enroute to a team state title. In the final section of the 4x200m Relay, the moment the cut into lane 1 was passed, a surge was made from their first leg, Micquan Gravely, and was held for the rest of the race by Milique Herron, Jamari Townsend, and Bryce West, who's efforts resulted in a new Division II/III record of 1:29.47.

Later that day in the final event of the meet, the 4x400m Relay, they returned with 3 of their 4 legs that had previously won the 4x200m from earlier in the day. Initially, Glenville was in second right behind Chardon NDCL for the first leg, but just like the 4x200m, they took the lead and held it the all the way to the tape, clocking a 3:23.20, just less than half a second shy of the DII/III record of 3:22.96 held by Dayton Dunbar.

Moving onto the 4x800m Relays, the girls from Salem kicked things off with a new DII/III record of 9:34.13, taking down St. Vincent-St Mary's mark of 9:35.93 set back in 2020, in the form of Ella Double, Megan Stafford, Maggie Hopple, and Maggie Hall. Just like the Glenville boys in their respective relays, they took the lead within the first half of the race and took it all the way to the line.

Shortly after in the final heat of the Boy's 4x800m Relay, the race itself had a constant change in leaders from start to finish, as this was anyone's race, and the chase pack was never too far behind from whoever was leading.

During the early half, Caroll made their presence known with a decent lead over the pack, which was led by Marlington, who eventually took the lead on the third leg of the race with Nash Minor. Even by the time the baton was handed off to the anchors, despite the lead, it was still anyone's race, but Colin Cernansky opened up even more a lead and was able to just hold off Ottawa Hills' Riley Nixon and Carroll's Logan Arnold, who closed phenomenally heading to the finish.

In the final heat and leg of the Girl's 4x200m Relay, it seemed that Cle. Hts. Beaumont had sealed the deal going into the final 150m of the race, but the ladies from Madeira closed the huge lead in the last few meters of the homestretch, with Vivian Momper sealing the deal by barely out-leaning Cle. Hts. Beaumont by less than a tenth of a second.

Closing out this recap are the Cle. Hts. Beaumont ladies in the 4x400m, who seemed to have come back for redemption after taking second in the 4x200m from earlier in the met. While the race kept progressing, they just kept on moving up, eventually taking the lead shortly after the hand-off to their third leg, Mariya Washington, opening a lead and handed off to Deasia Washington, who kept that lead all the way to the finish.
