Who makes the cut for top 1000 all-time performers at McAlpine Park?

Olympic Gold Medalist Shot Putter Adam Nelson was the keynote speaker last Thursday at Westminster HS as the Atlanta Track Club inducted 3 new memebers to the Track and Field 'Hall of Fame. Those inducted were Dwight Phillips formerly of Tucker HS, Coach Max Mayo formerly of Cedar Shoals and Emily Reese formerly of Chamblee (still at Harvard and running well) Pictured above is 2013 inductee Coach Tomy Sitton and Adam Nelson.

  Awesome races in the A Private Girls 3200, 5A 1600m and 6A 1600m. The weather did not hurt distance times a bit. Hold on to your umbrellas Friday!   Dramatic finishes in both the 5A & 6A 1600 brought the crowd to their feet.  Distance races are not suppose to be that exciting, but Alex Cameron, (5A, Dunwoody) and Mary Jeanne Assinzo, (6A, Marietta) demonstrated the quality of Georgia distance athletes.  

This class is going to be very tight if things hold up on paper (which they rarely do, and why we run the races) A big miscue, False Start, DQ could cost the 5A team title. The players are Pope, which is strong all around. Miller Grove who has incredible speed and trackstar Tiffany Flynn. North Springs whose real scoring ops will be the sprints, hurdles and relays. New Manchester will rely on their speed, relays, hurdles and horizontal hops. Northside WR has Cassondra Hall whose the favorite to take the 100/200, and strong relays. Forest Park's strengths are on the Field and Hurdles. 

There were some nice performances turned in by 5A Girls week ending 3-17, but Alex Cameron's 5:09 in the 1600 meter race at the Coaches Invitational earned her the overall 5A Girls 'AOW' honors this past week.

Tactical races may be seen all season during track to conserve energy, but that wasn’t the case at the Coaches Invite. Two gorgeous days set up for two amazing days of running, jumping and throwing. Meet records, school records, and personal records were shattered throughout the two days

Alex Cameron of Dunwoody High School has committed to run cross-country and track with the Miami University (Ohio) RedHawks.  Alex is a four-time Georgia state champion in cross-country (2012), the 1600 (2012, 2013) and the 3200 (2013).

CONGRATULATIONS Georgia on another outstanding year of Cross Country. For the 11th year in a row the Atlanta Track Club has continued its generosity with youth athletics and has agreed to sponsor TEAM GEORGIA by outfitting the top 15 girls who will run at the Footlocker South XC meet. The Footlocker South Regional will take place in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, 11/30 and is the precursor to the National XC Championships. Kathryn Foreman of Landmark Christian is 'Runner of the Year'  At Foot Locker South in 2012 Team Georgia's Girls placed 2nd in the 'State Team' competition!

Northview out of Duluth had firmly established themselves as the team to beat early October and the 'Stage' at Carrollton didn't deter them as the Bolts' struck quickly, seizing their first Girls Cross Country team and Individual Championship in school history, Lindsay Billings ran a strong race, never losing pace separating from 2012 champ Alex Cameron defining herself as one of the top girls in Georgia and a lock to make the Atlanta Track Club's Foot Locker South 'Team Georgia' squad who had their best team finish ever in 2012.

The ladies’ side has turned into a three team battle for the title with regionals behind us. Overall, it’s been a fun and exciting season and can’t wait to watch all the drama unfold on Saturday. On the individual end, Lindsay Billings has established herself as a top-5 all-class runner with impressive recent performances at Coach Wood and region. Good luck to everyone who’s competing. 

At the home of the DeKalb County meet on the Druid Hills MS course, Dunwoody, led by ace Alex Cameron fought off Lakeside-DeKalb taking the Girls 6-AAAAA region title. Those Futbol loving Clarkston boys, won their first region title in nearly 10 years besting traditional power Lakeside DeKalb by 12 points. Davis Stockwell from Lakeside secured the overall win in 16:23. 

Sorry for the delayon the announcement of the Week 7 Georgia High School 'Runners of the Week' as my desktop pc crashed and data was lost. This week's chosen are no strangers to this honor as Reilly Friedman of Galloway is the Boys ROW following his 15th place finish at Great American in 15:27 and Jenna Gearing from White County set a season best at the Mountain Invitational placing 1st in 18:38

 In a meet that wasn't even on the Calendar, the season's first results from DeKalb meets submitted was the County Championship held at Druid Hills MS. Its an interesting meet format as Marist has been excluded from competing for years now, leaving it to Lakeside-DeKalb to dominate nearly every Fall. But, hold on thar' Bobalooee, those dashing young men from Clarkston continued to amaze as they claimed the Boys team title and Dunwoody's girls took the team titles.

The Clara Bowl gets its name from the field where the race starts and finishes. For years this race has been one of the biggest meets to kick off the season. Teams do many different things before the Clara Bowl weekend, but usually most teams have raced their full squad all out by the end of this racing weekend, and many of them choose to do this at Berry. The meet was moved up a week earlier this year, likely because of the school having their first ever football game the following weekend, so it will be interesting to see if teams show up the same way they have in the past. Either way, we all know that this is a going to be a big field. Sometimes the younger and less experienced runners can get lost in the pack and add big points to their team score. And for this reason the first 200 meters of the race is usually a mad dash to get a good position....

How nice was it to contest the 2nd round of distance Finals and it not be 90+ degrees and no wind? Conditions were favorable, especially as the 6A 3200m began and Allie Buchalski came out of the fray as the reigning queen of Distance in Georgia after her swift 10:42 win. The 1A private 1600m was a barnburner as Naomi Grande Pierre bested a game Grace Tinkey in 5:05.70

With the internet signal lost 2 events into prelims, most of the Field Events did post as A, 2A, 3A began scoring points with Gordon Lee, ACS, Jeff Davis and SE Bulloch on top of the leader board.  Future USAF Academy teammates Lindy Long and Grace Tinkey took it to the wire in the A Private 3200m as Long won by 1 second in 10:51!   6A 1600m- Awesome race and lots of lead changes! Kelly actually led the first three laps and then Buchalski passed her with about 450 to go and hammered the final 200 meters. Incredible race by both of them to break 5;, was fun to watch. Yost had a pretty incredible kick to move up from 5 (?) to 3 on the last lap.

It was Spring Break for the majority of schools this past week thus not as many meets were on the Calendar. However, there were some awesome Individual performances headlined by the All Class selections of the week. Andres Littig made the trip down to the Florida Relays and clocked the top 800 meter time this Spring in 1:52.93  Daniel Haugh of St.Pius X traveled across the continent to the prestigous Arcadia Relays in 'Cali' and flung that Discus 176-6 placing 2nd overall.  Lambert's Leanne Zimmer scorched the track down in Mobile at the Challenge of Champions meet earning a spot in the all-time top 10 rankings in the 800 meters in 2:12.01 and Cassidy Callahan of Norcross tossed the Discus 145-7 at McEachern. Next week will conclude the Ga.MileSplit regular season AOW selections.

Its time for the Coaches Invitational again and its going to have some intense competition in many of the events. Pope HS is once again the meet host with Georgia Tech providing the venue at George Griffin Track with the impressive skyline of downtown Atlanta as a backdrop. Kendell Williams of  Kell HS will be competing fresh off her NBN record breaking national title in the Indoor Pentathlon.  The distance races are stacked with talented athletes including St. Pius stud Austin Sprague who placed 7th in the 2 Mile at NBN in 9:11  For a full meet preview from Coach Cathi Monk click on the article header above!

What an outstanding day for Georgia Harriers as Josh Brickell roared around McAlpine Park in 14:49 placing 2nd in the Boys Seeded race and Brad Hort earned his first trip to San Diego placing 6th cracking sub 15: as 2 of the best pure athletes in all of Georgia will make the trip to Foot Locker Nationals. It was a Great day for TEAM GEORGIA as the boys "team" won, scoring 67 points defeating mighty Virginia and the girls were 2nd scoring 78 points, Georgia's best showing in years...This TEAM GEORGIA thing has really improved our post season results in that when it started we had few kids run and now we are WINNING the meet! .Also of note is a strong showing from the up and coming 13/14 year olds. The ATC and Team Georgia committee are to be comended for their choices and need to take a bow as well! Pictured are the 5 Top Boys Medalists from Georgia.
