5 Events to Watch: Girls Individual Races

1. Girls Division 2  200m Dash

Prelims: 3:40pm Friday
Finals: 2:35pm Saturday

The running resume of some of the girls that will make finals is just simply impressive.  In the field you have four girls returning from last years finals, including reigning champion Aisha Cavin of Bishop Hartley.  Also in the field you have Cat Humphries of Archbishop McNicholas who was the 2006 100m State Champion, 2007 200m State Champion and the 2007 100m runner-up,  and 2008 100m State Champion and  2008 200m runner-up.  With eight girls having already run into the 24's this year, it is bound to be a photo finish.

2. Girls Division 1  100m Hurdles

Prelims: 5:15pm Friday
Finals: 4:30pm Saturday

This is a stacked group in the hurdles.  Eight different athletes in this group have all run 14.75 or less and it very well could take a sub 15 effort to make the finals.  The field is littered with seasoned veterans in Amber Smith, Tamica Harbour, Brittany Cheese, Danae Rockwell, Nicole Pachol as well as the freshman phenom Claudia Saunders.  If all of the girls are ready to go this could be one very competitive weekend of girls 100m Hurdles.

3. Girls Division 3  1600m Run

Finals: 10:05am Saturday

The big question here is how fast can Stephanie Morgan go.  She already has the third fastest time in the nation in the 1600m, can she get the top time?  She only needs to improve by .55 seconds to get the fastest time in the nation.  Or will Morgan run just to win the 1600m and then come back and crush the 800m, where she has the fourth fastest time in the nation and is only 2.6 seconds away from getting the top mark in the nation.

4. Girls Division 1 100m Dash

Prelims: 5:35pm Friday
Finals: 4:40pm Saturday

Talk about a blanket finish, this could be it.  If Mahagony Jones gets a good start, it is her race to lose, but if she falters just a little bit that open the door for everyone to have a chance at a state title.  All girls are within a half a second in their qualifying times from the regional meet, which should make for a great finish in both the prelims and finals.

5. Girls Division 1 800m Run

Finals: 5:55pm Saturday

Eleven girls within four seconds of each other, this could be a tight compact race.  Madeline Chambers of Magnificat has the fastest time coming in, but she will be coming off of the 1600m with less than an hour of rest, can she pull off the 8-16 double?  If she is in position coming off the ffinal curve she very well could be a double winner.
