On a cold and stormy night last week in Ashtabula County, St. Edward and Chardon lit up the track at NEOITC Series White Division and put on one of the best 4x800 meter duels in recent memory.
The Eagles and Hilltoppers went head-to-head on each leg last Wednesday, exchanging lead duties on several occasions and ultimately pushed each other to the state's top two marks of the indoor season.
In the end, St. Edward made it through the line first in 8:01.23 narrowly ahead of Chardon's 8:02.49 runner-up showing. Aside from their Ohio No. 1 and No. 2 clockings, the squads now reside at No.'s 7 and 10 nationally following their relay work at SPIRE.
Entering competition that evening, Chardon was the top ranked team Ohio-wide due to their 8:11.32 effort at the Championship Preview Meet and their latest performance represented a third sub-8:20 mark of the 2022 campaign. They went 8:19.98 to claim the White Division No. 2 meet title on January 19th.
While the win was of foremost importance to St. Edward, the performance also came along with record breaking distinction. The Eagles 4x800m mark is the best in the history of NEOITC Series competition. They usurped the previous standard of 8:10.42 recorded by Solon back in January of 2020.
