This year's state meet goes to prove that when the weather cooperates that Ohio athletes know how to take advantage of it and prove just how talented they are. At this year's state meet we saw some unbelievable performances, including Woodridge's all division record in the boys 4x800 of 7:37.43, which is the second fastest time run in the nation this year, Taylor Burke of Medina setting the all division record with a leap of 6-1.25, a nation leading mark, and AJ Hicks of Solon bombing the discus 200-7 to set the Jesse Owens Stadium record. These are just some of the amazing performances from Ohio track athletes at this year's state championship.
To start off, there were eight Jesse Owens Stadium records broken. The boys broke stadium records in the Discus, Long Jump, Pole Vault and the 4x800m Relay. The girls broke stadium records in the 100m Dash, the 800m Run, the High
Jump and the Pole Vault.
To top that, there were 13 state meet records broken. The D1 Boys Pole Vault, D1 Girls 800m and High Jump, the Boys D2 4x800m, 4x200m and 4x400m Relays, the Girls D2 4x800m Relay. The Division three meet saw six new state meet records, three from the boys and three from the girls. On the boys side in D3 the state meet record was broken in the Discus and the Long
Jump and tied in the High Jump. On the girls D3 side state meet records were set in the 100 Hurdles, the Shot Put and the Pole Vault.
To top that off each division saw two new State Records, one from each gender. Gahanna Lincoln's Jake Blankenship tied the Division 1 Boys Pole Vault record by clearing 17-0. Taylor Burke of Medina set the High Jum,p record by clearing 6-1.25. In Division 2 both genders broke 4x800m Relay record, Alter broke the girls record by finishing in 9:10.22, while the Woodridge boys ran the fastest time ever by an Ohio High School team by crossing the line in an impressive 7:37.43. And in Division 3 action, Dan Skiba of Mineral Ridge soared 24-5.25 for the Long Jump record while McComb's Jackie Leppelmeier launched the shot 49-3.5.
The meet also produced 22 new OH #1 marks. Twelve of the marks came on the boys side (200m, 400m, 1600m, 110H, 300H, 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m, Long Jump, Discus and Pole Vault). The girls set new OH #1 marks in ten different events (100m, 200m, 800m, 1600m, 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x800m, High Jump, Shot Put and Pole Vault).
To put the meet in terms of national prominence, there were twelve US Top 10 performance. The girls had four US Top 10 performances coming from the 800m, the Shot Put and two US Top 10 performances in the High Jump. On the boys side there were eight US Top 10 performances coming from the following events: 100h, 300h, 4x800m Relay, High Jump (x2), Discus, Shot Put and Pole Vault.
For a season that will be remembered as cold and rainy, Ohio athletes shined at the OHSAA State Track and Field Meet. Congrats to all state qualifiers, placers and champions. And a special congratulations to all state champion teams (LaSalle, Reynoldsburg, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Bishop Hartley, McDonald and Stuebenville Catholic Central) as well as team runner-ups (Centerville, Withrow, Dunbar, Rogers, Anna and Versailles).

Brannon Kidder: Joining the Lancaster Elite
Lancaster over the years has produced some of the State's most memorable middle-distance and distance runners. Bill Beaty, Clark Haley, John Zishka and Doug Conroy to mention a few. Now, Brannon Kidder, a Junior, can be counted among the Lancaster elite. Last Spring as a sophmore he finished 3rd in the D1 1,600 in a time of 4:15.86. He recently won the State Indoor 800m in a time of 1:54.04 and through Regionals he has posted the States fastest times in the 800 - 1:51.09 and in the 1.600 - 4:12.37. What can we expect from Brannon at State in the 1,600 and the 800? OHRunners inteviewed Brannon about his career, his running background and training methods as he prepares for the upcoming State meet this weekend. He's ready to go and has his sights set on winning both the 1,600 and the 800, as well as going under 1:50 in the 800. Humbly , he "hopes to do as well as he can" in recognizing that "there are many very good mid-distance/distance runners in Ohio this year."

This year's state meet goes to prove that when the weather cooperates that Ohio athletes know how to take advantage of it and prove just how talented they are. At this year's state meet we saw some unbelievable performances, including Woodridge's all division record in the boys 4x800 of 7:37.43, which is the second fastest time run in the nation this year, Taylor Burke of Medina setting the all division record with a leap of 6-1.25, a nation leading mark, and AJ Hicks of Solon bombing the discus 200-7 to set the Jesse Owens Stadium record. These are just some of the amazing performances from Ohio track athletes at this year's state championship.
