2011 OHSAA State Cross Country Championship Preview

Five teams and one individual will look to defend their State Championships from last year.  Versailles senior, Tammy Berger, will be looking for her third straight individual Cross Country title in the Division III Girls race.  One thing that is for sure is that there will be new course records established in all three divisions for both the males and the females.  This year will mark the first year in which the State Cross Country Meet will be held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

OHRunners Team Predictions by Mark Stonecipher

Hard not to go with St. Ignatius.  They determine their own destiny.  They were 3rd in 2010 and return three of their five scorers.  They have been atop the OATCCC Coaches Poll all season and are led by Senior Mitch Baum, who was 4th at the Tiffin Regional.  Just 1 second back of Baum is Jr. Jack Miller.  They are consistent runners and were just 1 second apart in the 2010 State run. The two are followed by Jr. Vince Bartam, Jr. Joe Arquillo and Sr. Drew Galang, who finished 16th, 21st and 23rd in Regionals, 13 seconds behind Miller and just 13 seconds apart.

Walsh Jesuit, led by Sr. Tony Howkins, should capture 2ndJesuit captured the Youngstown Regional with Sr. Mathew Krakora and Jr. Brian Brennan finishing 5th and 6th, Jr. Jordan Shephard, 15th and Jr. Cole Francetic, 41st.  All of Jesuit’s runners ran last year in the State competition.  The key for them however, may just be how well their 5th runner finishes.

St. Xavier won the fast Troy Regional with a total time of 1:22.09.  Mason was 2nd, running 1:22.49.  Mason however, will be the pick for 3rd based upon their experience.  St. Xavier was 6th in the 2010 Championship, but none of their five scorers on this year’s Regional Championship team ran at Scioto Downs last year.  Mason’s top three runners are all returners from last year’s 8th place State team.  All five scorers at Regional’s were less than 22 seconds apart, running 14th (Jr. Alex Notton), 15th (So. Tom Clark), 17th (Jr. Connor Van Blarico), 21st (So. Zac Thompson) and 29th  (Jr. Joey Stimler).

St. Xavier is led by 3rd place Regional finisher, So. Michael Hall.  Their strength is in their tight group.  All five runners were just 39.9 seconds apart at Regionals.  So. Evan Stifel 11th, Jr. Alex Kelvin, 18th, Jr. Michael Momper, 24th and Sr. Sean Hogan, 26th.

The 5th spot in the D1 Division should go to either Olentangy Liberty or Dublin CoffmanLiberty bested Coffman at the Pickerington Regional by 8 points and just .20 seconds.  Their District meet went to Coffman who outscored Olentangy by 3 points and 14 seconds.  If experience counts however, Coffman placed 4th at State last year and all five scorers return led by last year’s 9th place finisher, Jr. Adam Davisdon.

OHRunners Team Predictions by Mark Stonecipher

Mason should win this one.  They are the 2010 State runner-up, experienced,  and are led by the Troy Region’s number two runner and last year’s 12th place State finisher, Sr. Monica Lake.  Mason will be very difficult to beat.  Their other four scorers are: Jr. Lauren Wood, 11th, Sr. Bridget McElhenny, 14th, Jr. Tori Martin, 16th and Sr. MacKenzie Jensenn, 24th.

The 2nd place team should be Brunswick out of the Tiffin Region.    Their 1st three girls, led by Sr. Loren McDaniel, ran 11th, Sr. Alexis Uber, 12th and So. Tara Horton, 13th at the Regional race and were only separated by 3.6 seconds.  They will need to have good performances from their 4th and 5th runners, So. Kristine Camper and Sr. Selena Pasadyn, to solidify their runner-up position.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams should all come out of the Troy Region.  Beavercreek, based upon their strong 2nd place Regional finish, should be 3rd.  4th and 5th place will be a toss-up between Centerville and SpringboroBeavercreek is led by 3rd place Regional finisher, Jr. Sydney Leiher and 9th place finisher, Jr. Hannah Bailey.  Key for Beavercreek will be the runs of their 3rd, 4th and 5th place runners; Sr. McKenzie Maxson, Fr., Emma Hensley and So. Danielle Boranex, none of whom have experience at the State level.  Springboro is led by 6th place Regional finisher and State returner, Jr. Rachael Mahle (39th).  On Mahle’s heal’s is 7th place Regional finisher, Jr. Lycia Hollon.  Both were under 19:00 minutes at Regionals.  Key for Springboro will be having Sr. Heather Baruzes (17th), Fr. Keaton Case (33rd) and So. Kim Streetz (45th), stepping-up and performing well at State.  Centerville is led by 10th place Regional finisher, So. Megan Harris.  They are a young team.  Their 2nd and 3rd runners, So. Meredith Rintoul (18th) and So. Emily Pantuso (20th) are followed by Jr. Christine Zavakos (21st) and Sr. Viola Deng (31st) All four runners are just 44 seconds apart.  Inexperience at the State level may be their weakness.
