How do Freshman runners fare at the varsity level? How do they transition from the 2-mile, Middle School distance, to the 3.1 mile varsity distance? Obviously, there are some very talented Middle School runners, but statistics indicate that very few step up as Freshman into the varsity spotlight. At last year’s OHSAA Cross Country Championships, in all six boys and girls divisions, a total of 883 runners competed. Of the 883, 98, just 11% of the runners were Freshman. A closer look at the Freshman statistics for each of the divisions is interesting, but what are the reasons that we don’t see more Freshman faring well at the varsity level? There may not be a simple answer, but the statistics do indicate that there is a definite maturation that takes place; physically, mentally and in experience, and that there is even a more distinct difference between the boys and the girls as they transition from the Middle School to the High School level.
4/21/10 Weekly Update
We just wrapped up the start of the most exciting 22 days in Ohio High School Cross Country. Let's take a look back at the conference meets. Also check out which boys team wore pink to race in this weekend.
After last weeks amazing results and top notch performances, this week quieted down a little in terms of movement on the state leaderboards. There were some impressive marks set this weekend, and a big name opened up his indoor campaign for the year with some great times.
Preview for the Pickerington North Regional, including qualified teams, qualified individual runners and predictions for each race. Look for the Tiffin Preview on Tuesday and the GlenOak Preview on **Thursday**.
Trying to figure out who is the best team is nearly impossible without running any races, but OHRunners has tried to do just that (solely based on last year's results and returning runners). This is even tougher on the girls side because of how much of an impact freshman can make come post-season time. Over the next few days we will take a look at the top returning teams for both genders in all divisions. Today we take a stab at the Preseason Division 2 Top 10 Girls Teams.
