OHSAA State Championships: Division 2 Preview

Boys

This preview could have started out with a Division 2 record watch, but fortunately, we were a little late for that, as THREE Division 2 records were taken down in the field events this month through the names of Dillon Morlock (Norwayne 2024) and Grant Harrison (New Richmond 2025). However, despite that first statement, it just means that we can look much further than just a divisional record, as both of these athletes potentially have the chance to rewrite the Ohio All-Times List through their pursuit of a state title this weekend.

Starting with one of the most dominant throwers in OHSAA history, Dillon Morlock (Norwayne 2024) rewrote the Discus and Shot Put list once again with marks of 203-9 and 71-1; both of which were set at the WCAL Championships earlier this month. In terms of the All-Times List across all divisions, Morlock now ties for #2 All-Time in the Discus alongside Christian Smith (McDonald 2015), and now holds the #3 All-Time spot in the Shot Put, joining Dustin Brode (Canfield 2010) and Jimmie Pacifico (Butler 2007) as the only throwers in Ohio history to have eclipsed the 70-0 mark in the event. In comparison to the All-Times List, Morlock is 2 feet, 5 inches off of the Discus record, and a mere 2.5 inches off of the Shot Put record.

For Grant Harrison (New Richmond 2025), while he does have solid marks across the board within the sprints and jumps, his forte is in the Pole Vault, as those who had a chance to witness him clear 17-0 at OHSAA Division 2 Region 8 - Piqua. In addition to being a new personal best by almost 4 inches, it is also now tied for OH #3 All-Time alongside Joey Uhle (Olen. Liberty 2011), and roughly one bar lower than Conner McClure (Green 2021) state record vault of 17-3 from 2021. Looking ahead of just this weekend, this will not be Harrison's last chance at chasing that record, as he is just a junior.

Looking to the relays for Division 2, the Duke's of Marlington will be returning this year to defend their title once again in the 4x800m Relay, coming into the meet as not just the top seed based off of the regional competition, but also the only team in Division 2 this season that has dipped under 7:50 for the event. To top it off, three of the four from the championship winning lineup will be back this weekend (Logan Citino (Marlington 2024), Luke Ryan (Marlington 2025), Colin Cernansky (Marlington 2024), with Michael Nicholls (Marlington 2024) being the new addition in place for now-alum, Cohen Boyce (Marlington 2023). Just behind them, a slew of sub-8 performances, which could potentially make this year one of the deepest fields ever put together for Division 2.

Marlington - 7:54.94
Carroll - 7:55.41
Woodridge - 7:56.69
Jonathan Alder - 7:57.89
Bay - 7:57.92
Ontario - 7:58.04
Ottawa-Glandorf - 7:58.38
CVCA - 7:58.39

For Coy Hyre (Brookville 2025), he has been on a tear this year, winning his first state championship title during the wintertime in the 60m Dash along with coming runner-up in the 200m Dash, to having an undefeated spring season in the 100m Dash, and a near undefeated spring across the bear when adding on the 200m and 400m Dash. Including preliminaries, in the 28 individual races he took part in, he won 25 out of the 28, with personal bests set at least once in each of the sprints. For this weekend, he will be contesting the 100m and 200m Dash, although he will be joined by Dawayne Galloway (Marion-Franklin 2025) in the 100m Dash as two individuals who have been seeded with marks of 10.5x.

Keeping the focus on the homestretch, the Boy's 110m Hurdles is looking to be anyone's race, as we will see the return of the state champion, Dai'Vontay Young (Dunbar 2024), who will also be joined a familiar name from the indoor season, Brayden Richards (Perry 2024). Alongside them as well, are two individuals who didn't compete during the main indoor season but have made themselves known this spring, are the Chayse Lipscomb (Fairfield Union 2025) and Beau Harkelroad (2024). Lipscomb and Harkelroad are currently the Top-2 seeds in the event, however, they are only separated by a mere hundredth of a second, with Young being the third seeded under 14:.30 with his 14.29.

Rounding things out will be the Boy's 3200m Run, which will be interesting as we will see Colin Cernansky (Marlington 2024) and Sam Su (Woodridge 2024) doubling back for this event on the second day of Division 2 from the 1600m Run, while Ben Shields (St. Clairsville 2024) leads the performance lists with a seed time of 9:19.01, just ahead of Cernansky by over half a second. Compared to the majority, Shield has kept his racing to a minimum this outdoor season but has put up solid performances, nonetheless. Outside of the 4x800m Relay that he will be a part of on Day 1, Shields will be on nearly fresh legs for Day 2, as he looks to take home his first state title.
