OHSAA State Championship: Preview

Division 2: Boys

It might be a photo finish this weekend for the Division 2 Boys, as at first glance at how individuals have performed so far this season, it might be a dogfight for last year's champion Andrew Walton (Fairfield Union 2025), to find his spot on top of the podium once again, as Chance Basilone (Lexington 2025) and Ty Rosengarten (Ottawa-Glandorf 2025) are currently 1-2 on the Ohio lists with their sub-15:20 efforts, both of which were put up during the qualifying stages leading into this weekend.

Something to note for Basilone and Rosengarten, they have gone head-to-head at several highlight meets this season which include OHSAA Early Season Invitational, Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, and most recently, OHSAA Division 2 Region 6 - Tiffin, where Basilone won with his current personal best of 15:14.28.

Basilone will be looking to find himself on the podium for the first time ever, while Rosengarten will be looking to improve upon his nineth place finish from last year.

For Walton, he has won every single race this season except for one, where he took the runner-up spot against Tate Ruthers (Sheridan 2025), who will be competing in the Division 1 portion of the state championships. He will be an exciting one to watch though, as his signature kick could prove to be lethal to the rest of the competition.

On the team side, Fairfield Union is looking to be the favorites, as they have been on top of the Coaches' Poll for Division 2 for the entire season, and are currently ranked first on the MileSplit Team Scores list. They also currently have the best 1-5 average in the division of 15:51.24 based off of current performances; also, being the only sub-16 average.

Alongside Andrew Walton, they will also be returning with Nathan Philips, Andrew Ray, Christian Reindle, and Connor Runkle. Ryan Boyer and Cordel Runkle will be the newest additions to the state lineup.
