Top Ten Ohio Boys All-Time Indoor Performances- The Sprints & Hurdles
The Indoor season is upon us. With only the Footlocker Nationals remaining in the HS Cross Country season, it's time to take a close look at our top indoor returners. Here's a look at the top 50 returning girls in the Sprints and Hurdles.
Jacob Blankenship set the OHSAA All-Division record in the Pole Vault by clearing a height of 17-1 (OH #1,US #3) Thursday night at the Division 1 Central District Meet at Hilliard Darby. Blankenship's vault bests the previous state record of 17-0 that he and Joey Uhle (Olentangy Liberty) both set last year. Blankenship has a personal best vault of 17-6.5 that he set during an indoor competion at Oberlin this year.
As a freshman, Jake Blankenship reluctantly approached Gahanna track coach Ed Rarey and expressed a tepid interest in pole-vaulting. Just a few days into practice, he disappointed his sports-minded family by deciding to quit. His mother, Becky, had set track records at Heidelberg College. His father, Kevin, is a bodybuilder and personal trainer. (via )
Much of this meet obviously depends on who runs what.... but regardless, this meet will be loaded, and some great battles will no doubt occur. In the 110 Hurdles, the matchup between Asad Maiden of Mason vs. Joey Wilkin of Westerville North and the ever-improving Leonard Staten of Wayne should be a great start. The 300s should also be fun with 8 athletes coming to the meet all under 41, and a few under 40.
With 41 schools and 17 conferences represented, the Wayne Invitational will have interest piqued across the state. The meet has grown to one of the premeir events to showcase talented teams and individuals in Southwestern Ohio as well as across the state. This meet will be a true balance of sprints, hurdles, distance and field events. The team championship is truly up for grabs, for both boys and girls.
Jake Blankenship set a new Ohio Record and Personal Best on his way to winning the High School portion of the 2012 National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada with a clearence of 17-4.5. Jake's mark tops his previous best performance at New Balance Outdoor Nationals where he cleared 17-0.75 on his way to winning the National Championship. It has been reported that Blankenship had solid attempts at 17-10, which would have been a National High School Indoor Record.
Jake Blankenship, a Senior at Gahanna Lincoln, is Ohio’s 2011 State D1 Pole Vault Champion and the all-time Ohio outdoor record holder with a vault of 17-0.75” (5.2) at the 2011 New Balance Outdoor Nationals. He is not only the top vaulter in Ohio, but is the nation’s #2 indoor and outdoor ranked returning vaulter. He believes that anything is possible with hard work, dedication and support. His goals this year are ambitious. He wants to capture the National HS Indoor and Outdoor Records. Indoors - 5.48m (17'10"). Outdoors - 5.60m (18'4"). It’s going to just take a lot of dedication, support and hard work. (Photo Coutresy of Photorun.net)

Last Saturday the Ohio weather finally cooperated and at the Hilliard Districts, three of Ohio's and three of the nations best HS Pole vaulters got to go head to head. Joey Uhle, a Senior from Olentangy Liberty, who holds Ohio's indoor record with a vault of 17'3", was the first High School vaulter in Ohio to go over the 17' mark and now holds the Ohio outdoor record with a 17' vault at Districts, Jake Blankenship, a Junior from Gahanna Lincoln, who just last week set a new Ohio outdoor vault record clearing16'10" and Chris Uhle, Joey's twin brother, who until the last two weeks held the State record of 16'9" that he had set at last years State Championships.
It was a big day at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Fieldhouse and it had nothing to do with the ‘Cats match-up against Vanderbilt. Fast times, new state leaders and US top 10 performances were all over the Ohio High School Indoor Track and Field scene this past weekend. Ohio State, Akron, Findlay and Marietta all provided exciting meets and terrific marks for this early in the season.
